Where's The Writing Submitted on: 2009-10-07 |

| Morrissey Needs to look up Steven Street or Johnny Marr again. I reserve 5 stars for brilliant discs. 2 stars for 40% of the disc that have good or great songs. The rest is rubbish. Morrissey, get back to the Quarry. That was your last great disc(The One with the b-sides on it, that no-one new was coming out, so they bought the first one and then had to buy the next one as well. Thanks?) Alan Whyte has the gift of crafting songs, use him more please. Jesse Tobias wrote on this one and on Ringleader and most of his stuff is crap. Boz can have some really good songs, but he disappeared on this one. Both Ringleader and this one are crap and just sit on the shelf. It's not even worth breaking this out to listen to the good songs on it. I say this having all of the Smiths and Morrissey's music. I wonder when Morrissey's people will put the b-sides out to this one with the good songs on it (Cynical, skeptical, and disappointed in the Morrissey camp at this point). After this , I didn't want to pay the $80 to stand (general admission) and see his show at some outdoor event. |

I think it is patronizing to a brilliant artist to act like everything he has ever done and will do is golden. I just wish I had been warned about this album instead of the opposite. I HAD to buy this based on the hype I was getting.
If you are a Morrissey or Smiths fan, give it a pass is my advice. Let's just hope the next one is better. If you are into some other kind of watered-down crap, then maybe this is for you.

A first to last album Submitted on: 2009-10-02 |

| I was introduced to Morrissey about six years ago and ever since then I haven't been able to stop listening to Moz and The Smiths. Years of Refusal is a perfect example of how Morrissey is getting better with age. Like trying a new food, this record wasn't want I had in mind, but by the next day after purchase I was in love and the CD did not come out of my home player for six months. "I'm throwing my arms around Paris" is a fabulous single with a great hook, and many other songs simply define the Artist. Personal faves are "Something is squeezing my Skull", "Sorry doesn't help", "It's not your birthday anymore" (which can remind one of "unhappy birthday" with the Smiths), and "one day goodbye will be farewell" and "I'm okay by myself" are traditional Moz. The record has no real low spots, and is a great journey for any "real" Morrissey fan. I give it an A+, but personally believe that the 2006 record, Ringleader of the Tormentors, is a little bit better. |

Moz, you've still got it. Submitted on: 2009-09-03 |

I've been a huge Mozza fan for many years,
and I must say that I was not one bit disappointed by this album.
The first single, 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris' is a classic Morrissey tune,
a great melody - met with beautiful, melancholic lyrics. He's the King of the Brooders and we love him for it!
'Something Is Squeezing My Skull' was a great choice as a second single as well,
it's upbeat, yet still very cynical and clever lyric wise.
As far as the rest of the tracks go,
there isn't any filler to bother with,
you shouldn't be disappointed.
Any true Moz fan will want this record in their collection.

Moz, you are better than this. Submitted on: 2009-08-09 |

| I find it so odd that the majority of Morrissey fans liked Years of Refusal. It is a big departure for him. I agree with several other reviews in that Ringleader of the Tormentors wasn't as good as anything before You Are the Quarry. And this is much worse! Much too poppy and prominent guitars, and his lyrics almost seem like an exaggeration of his style. Excessive repetition and no original political commentary. Definitely disappointed. Sorry Moz, you lose a bundle of cool points with this one. |
