Review from Melt Magazine - Columbus, OH

Initially breezing through the Irish supergroup's lofty new record is an underwhelming undertaking for those expecting the loud bombast of Vertigo or the funky dance rhythms of Pop. Those initiates versed in the genius of longtime U2 collaborator/producer and father of ambient music Brian Eno may however find the subdued, trans-radio experimentation comprising No Line on The Horizon to be a victorious new direction for the mega-band, now in their 33rd active year. Emphasis on atmosphere is an obvious sonic motif throughout, accompanied by lyrical themes of universality ("I've been in every black hole, at the alter of the dark star"), love ("my body's now a begging bowl, begging to get back to my heart"), spirituality ("to the rhythm of my soul") and phycology ("to the rhythm of my unconsciousness") summed up in succession on one of the better cuts Moment of Surrender. The payoff is reminiscent to the the mid eighties sound of The Unforgettable Fire. The upside being the more poetic, arty side of the quintet exchanged for the colorful, larger than life, megaton-rock side. Overall, the universal themes and trance invoking ambient soundscapes could potentially come off with the zing of Radiohead's In Rainbows... for the 50 y/o+ audience at least, who have followed their beloved U2 from the start. For me the bountiful, blurred transitions and often out of focus sounding choruses couple with the album's booklet photography a little too well. That is, we find the band wandering throughout various gray tundras, starring aimlessly into the distance and striking a pose when the habitual moment of clarity arises. - Tyler Starkey

Some good songs, not all

Some of the songs on this album are really good, they have that "good old" U2 sound. I'm talking about for instance "Magnificent", "White as Snow" and "Cedars of Lebanon". The other songs are, in my humble opinion, quite boring. But all in all it's an entertaining CD, definately worth the buy.
U2 is still the best rock band.

I dont buy every u2 album that comes out, but am i ever glad i bought this one, its just a fantastic uplifting, euphoric record. recently bono said, its not a singles record, its an album with a beginning , middle and and end. so true. also, ive heard it called electronically experimental. what a bunch of hogwash, this album is just straight up great rocknroll for the most part.
Takes time to get used to

By reading the other reviews you kind of get a mixed bag of opinions. But, I do feel this is their best album in awhile. Unfortunately, this album is not even close to Joshua Tree, Unforgettable Fire, and Achtung Baby. It definitely is better than their last album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. There is not really one song that hooks you in, and you say wow!!! This is probably why it does not have as much radio play. But, the songs are overall strong. The song "Breathe" is my favorite. At first listen I had to get used to it. I do feel this album was a decent chapter in U2. And the concert at the Rose Bowl was amazing. Though U2 is not what it used to be, their music is still relevant and strong.
