I'm going out/I'm gonna drink myself to death

Ever had that awful feeling after a bad breakup? Where you just want to go out and drink a ton to drown your sadness? Florence Welch knows that feeling - she even wrote a song about it. In fact, my favorite song on the album, appropriately titled "Hurricane Drunk."

This is an album I happened to stumble upon based on a quick snippet in a magazine. I bought it on a whim, and I've had it on repeat about 4 hours a day for the last week. The first song, "Dog Days are Over" sets the tone for the album - quirky, bouncy, with killer vocals. Those killer vocals are all throughout the album - Florence can really sing! The lyrics and instrumentation, as mentioned before, are quirky, but insanely beautiful. They're also very catchy - I've woken up singing "Drumming Song" in my head several days in a row.

Other standouts on the album include "Howl" - a sweeping epic of a song that has distinctly werewolf vibes to it; as well as the stunning "You've Got the Love" - a cover of a gospel song, Florence has made it universal - and catchy as hell. You want to sing along as you journey with Florence through the album. Emotions vary widely - joyous, melancholy, yearning, grieving, and hopeful. This is one of the best albums I have bought in many years, and I can't wait for anything else that Florence has to offer in the future.
One Of The Best Albums Of 2009

Although Lungs is Florence and the Machine's first full-length record, Florence Mary Leontine Welch, the lead singer and songwriter, has been generating press since 2007 drawing comparisons to Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Kate Nash among others. In June of 2008, Florence and the Machine released their debut single "Kiss with a Fist" which received significant critical acclaim and had fans instantly demanding more.

Fans of the care-free, catchy fun that drives "Kiss With a Fist" may find themselves disappointed with what a full album of Florence and the Machine material has to offer, but Lungs will inevitably draw in a great deal of new fans with detailed and beautifully layered tracks significantly more mature sounding than the lead single. Think of a generally more upbeat Fiona Apple with significantly more background instrumentation.

Lungs does a perfect job of slowly introducing a new listener to Florence and the Machine on one play through. The lead track, "Dog Days Are Over" opens quietly with the feature given to Welch's powerful voice and gradually introduces percussive instruments complete with hand claps giving any listener something to look forward to when they see Florence and the Machine live. "Dog Days Are Over" is as close to "Kiss With a Fist" as it gets for the remainder of the album. The following track, "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)," is significantly more experimental with vocals vaguely resembling Bjork at first and blossoming into a choir of epic proportions. The mood and tempo then drops quickly for the third track, "I'm Not Calling You a Liar," which is more a testament of the songwriting capability of Welch and Isabella Summers, the keyboard player of the group, than it is musically strong. Each track is equally captivating for different reasons and hardly ever lets up.

The climax of the record comes during another Welch/Summers song, "Cosmic Love," where a tremendous combination of vocals, percussion, and instrumentation builds to a point two minutes and thirty-five seconds in that is unforgettable. Although this is truly the most powerful point on the record, the final four songs are far from being filler tracks. In fact, "You've Got the Love," the follow-up single to "Kiss With a Fist" is actually the final track on the CD.

Florence and the Machine have already earned significant praise and Lungs is proof that it was well deserved. It is hard to call any song a weak point and while the catchiness of "Kiss With a Fist" is lost on the majority of the record, the clarity of each instrumental layer topped with the prowess of Welch's vocals is plenty to captivate any listener.

Similar Artists: Lily Allen, Kate Nash

Track Suggestion: Cosmic Love

This album, "Lungs", by UK newcomer sensation Florence & The Machine, is definitely unique and had me at a loss for words...equal parts delicate and hit-you-over-the-head bombastic, but charming in all the right ways that you don't mind being bowled over...actually, you'll be willing to come back for more like Pavlov's dog!!

I hate comparing artists, as it's become a cliche, but Flo defies this and all convention...she's a force to be reckoned with, and her revolving door band adds perfect and unexpected colours to her splatterings on her already beautiful canvas...equal parts avante garde, classically-influenced instrumentation & arrangements, with UK soul & pop-punk rock & roll energy...in the wrong hands, Flo's sound would be an instant, utter mess...Flo is a genius for making her unique sound work...combine these bright soulful musical flowers with lyrics that incorporate violence, childlike fairy tale innocence, adventure and wonder...

Vocally, Flo reminds me of so many people...Adele, Kate Bush, Bjork, Loreena McKennitt, Annie Lennox, Dido, Sharleen Spiteri from Texas, KT Tunstall, Kate Nash, and many more, and her approach has a colourful epicness that can even be compared to my beloved Flaming Lips, but her music and album "Lungs" remind me of none of them...Flo actually came up with her own creation and it's a beautiful thing. All 13 songs are great and take you on a real adventure you'll want to take over and over again..."Kiss With A Fist" is shockingly violent but catchy and punkrock energetic, and great fun all at the same time..."Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" could be song of the year...such an uplifting masterpiece overflowing with emotion that first time I heard it, I felt like my heart was going to explode when the chorus hit!! All the songs have a unique flavour and combination of musical colours that you can't compare this record to anything else out there, but at the same time, it's like what my musical mind has been waiting for my whole life...an incredible experience...the final track, "You Got The Love", a cover by The Source that Joss Stone just covered on her new album as well...great song and a fitting, uplifting finale.

BestBuy's version comes with a great little DVD with 3 vidclips of "Dog Days", "The Drumming Song" & "Kiss With A Fist"...really colourful, adventurous and frolicking fun...as well as 3 live performances and interviews...wow, she's even better live than on record, and she comes across as emotional, fun, artistic, creative, smart as a whip and like a female Wayne Coyne (from the Flaming Lips)...she knows EXACTLY what she's doing...and I love the unexpected unstruments in her band like a harp and string quartet, along with her punky rock & roll core of guitar/bass/drums/keys...totally cool, I have to meet Florence Welch!!

MAJOR contender for best album of 2009...EASILY...yes, do yourself a favour and believe the hype...check expectations at the door and buy "Lungs"...a beautiful work of emotional art.
