| | | When Tim 'Ripper' Owens succeeded Rob Halford, joining JudasPriest in May 1996 he blew even the harshest critics away. Halford's return putan end to Owens' stint with Judas Priest. More or less immediately, he wasenlisted by Jon Schaffer to team up with Iced Earth where he recorded 2 albums. 2008 saw Owens move on to join Yngwie Malmsteen. 'Play My Game' is theFirst solo album and features an unbelievable list of guest musicians basically a metal who's who. | | Play My Game Tracks/Songs

Ripper tears it up on his own, May 28, 2010
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
I have been a Ripper Owens fan since he first silenced the naysayers with Priest's Jugulator and basically revived them with new life. After stints with Iced Earth and Beyond Fear he proves he can hold his own with his Debut Solo Album "Play My Game". This album is a killer from start to finish! I couldnt wait to get this and i certainly was not let down in any way. He delivers the goods on this one and this Album has a great backing band including guitarists like Bob and Bruce Kulick, and Craig Goldy. I really hope that he does another Solo Album like this in the future. In the meantime i have this to tide me over. Thanks Tim!

Ya for Ripper and his solo album, November 2, 2009
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
Before i got this cd i was a bit worried that ripper wouldnt be able to pull through. It's pretty hard to not to judge someone so harsh when their last band were judas priest and iced earth. But after hearing i can say it's a pretty good cd. It may not be what many are expecting but it's a cool solid album. I don't know why some people are giving it really bad reviews. The music is awesome and so are the vocals(come on it's ripper pssh that guy gots some pipes). So just get the cd and give it a good listen!!!
GOOD BUY
p/s the album cover looks freakin awesome!I would totally love that as a poster!

Stellar solo effort, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
I loved this CD on the first pass. I thought the vocals were strong and the musicanship was fanatastic even from some players that I never thought much about. If you like Heaven & Hell or Dio's solo work you will love this recording. This is "TRUE", "OLD SCHOOL" metal...

Dissappointing mess, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
this cd is so bad I don't think I have the creative writing ability to describe it's suck, but for the sake of saving fellow fans $15 I will try anyway.
It reminded me of rejected tracks from Demolition and then I found out some of the songs WERE rejected tracks from Demolition ...
It's worse than The Glorious Burden tracks Tim helped write (for example Red Baron) and that is saying something.
It's worse than the cheesiest tracks on the ultimately forgettable (but still quite a bit better) Beyond Fear cd.
From a Judas Priest stand point it is worse than 2wo and on par with Glenn Tiptons vocals on his solo records (nuff said). A better comparison would be Al Atkin's solo cd's but I can't remember them well enough to make one. Hopefully I will forget listening to Play My Game someday too.
I would recommend this cd to no one. Seriously, unless you have money to throw away even if you are a hardcore Priest and/or Ripper fan do yourself a favor and preview this album first. Even if you download the cd it will still feel like you put too much effort into getting it compared to what you end up with. That said, I'm sure there are a couple hundred people living on the planet that actually think this thing is great and if you are one of them (it sold 800 copies in the USA so far...) then by all means don't be offended by my opinion. Enjoy, and file it right next to the "masterpieces" Demolition and The Glorious Burden.
If you want a good Tim Owen's fronted cd get Iced Earth's Framing Armageddon. Aside from a few songs on Jugulator and Demolition the best IMO cd he's done the vocals for to date.
I hope Tim really shines in some future project (he has 3 coming up, a new Yngvie cd which depending on if you like Yngvie you might like, a new Beyond Fear cd, and a project with Richard Christy from Howard Stern, Iced Earth etc.. called Charred Walls of the Damned). His best bet is to have a really talented songwriter do the writing and stay away from the creative process altogether (again see Framing Armageddon from Iced Earth as proof under the right circumstance he can shine). This record proves even writing the vocal melodies are beyond his ability (listen to "The Cover Up" and you tel me!). Sorry Ripper fans, but it's the truth and so what? The guy has an incredible voice and that should be enough if he finds the right people to work with. Not everyone can be multitalented ala Halford or Dio even if he can mimic those singers note for note. I'd love to see Ripper shine but this record is a waste of those crazy metal pipes God gave him.

Played and Lost, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
I write few reviews, but when I do I review a product for what it is, as opposed to what it is not. I do not expect a Tim Owens solo disc to be a Judas Priest, Iced Earth, or Beyond Fear album, which was mediocre at best. In fact, I hardly care what style it is, so long as it's good. And simply put, this album is not good; it is bad.
When Blaze Bayley left Iron Maiden few expected much. He ended up delivering albums that easily surpassed his work with Maiden and each stands on its own. I was hoping Tim Owens would do the same. After all, the albums he did with Priest were fairly lame to begin with. As it turns out, Tim's apparent need to prove his song-writing abilities has proven nothing but an ability, for the most part, to write bad songs.
There are some decent musical moments, and an occasional song does succeed (to a point), such as No Good Goodbyes. All too often, however, good musical moments are not fully realized or are ruined by comically bad lyrics and Tim's mid-range warble.
A work of "art" (term used generously here) should not necessarily be judged on a pass/fail basis. However, a game is either lost or won. I chose to play Tim Owens' game and lost - $13.99 to be precise.

ripper shows you what he is made of, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Play My Game (Audio CD)
this solo effort by the great singer who once fronted judas priest, winters bane, and iced earth, goes it on his own.
a sensational lineup of premier players, such as billy sheehan, jeff loomis, rudy sarzo, doug aldrich, steve stevens ripper puts together the ultimate metal cd.
his vocals are spot on,from the opening cut "believe",through the entire cd,he has firmly established himself as a great singer with loads of range.
the work is indisputably the finest he has ever done, and draws the line of his former styles where he had to fall in line with what the bands he fronted demanded of him.
this is a must have, and any ripper fan knows what he is capable of achieving.

Man, I love this cd,it really hits home for me. Great songs, great production, I think some of Rippers best work, I think the main reason is the songs are well written and fit his voice, nice work Tim
