 Another Strong Album From Indigo Girls

"Poseidon and the Bitter Bug" is the eleventh regular studio album from the Indigo Girls duo. Musically this album is an extension of their previous line with strong roots in American folk and country.
As usual, the girls share the song writing equally between them. Emily Saliers generally shows a very high level in her songwriting, which is also the case on this album. Saliers strength is the melodic ballads, often reminiscent of English Sandy Denny.
Amy Ray's songs perhaps span wider in genres, but are also generally more uneven in quality.
On "Poseidon and the Bitter Bug" Ray delivers some of the best she has written over time for the duo.
"Sugar Tongue" is a Latin-beat song with a great chorus, beautifully sung by Ray. A lot of Beatles inspiration both in melody and instrumentation. Definitely one of the highlights of the album.
Equally strong is the Dylan-inspired "Second Time Around" - a counterpart to Dylan's own "Fourth Time Around"? This is a song you just want to hear again and again.
Ray's "Driver Education" and "Ghost Of The Gang" is more for me to oblivion.
The closing track, which has been highlighted by other reviewers reminds me too much of Radiohead's "Creep". When you consider that Oasis were deprived of the rights to the excellent single "Whatever" it must be a formality for Radiohead to win any legal proceedings relating to "True Romantic"
All of Emily's songs are favorites for me, especially, however, "Digging For Your Dream," "I'll Change" and "Fleet of Hope".
The deluxe edition album contains acoustic versions of all songs. In most cases the difference is not significant, and I think I generally prefer the fully instrumentated versions.
The extra song "Salty South" is okay, but not a song you could not have done without. |

 Single CD Version Is GREAT!

Unfortunately, I didn't know there was a two CD version of this w/ bonus tracks when I bought this or I would have looked for it, instead. Knowing me, I will probably seek out the double CD and pick it up shortly, in the mean time, I'll be happy with this one.
THANK OUR LUCKY STARS. The girls are back in fine form on this CD. It's about time! I think the organization of their own label was a GREAT THING TO DO.
I have EVERYONE of their CD's. But, this one has made it onto rotation of favorites on my Ipod and CD player. It's probably their BEST new release for many years. It's lighter in places and more harmonic in others but, it's back to bliss for these girls on this release and I for one am HAPPY! This release is more along the lines of their roots and fans will be happy, just as I am. They are writing, playing & singing with the same flavors/colors that made us all love them to begin with! I just wish I could see them this tour. I'm sure it will be one of their better ones. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, I'll just have to be happy with loving and enjoying the CD.
If you've liked anything they've done in the past, you'll love this one too! I know that most of the songs on the bonus tracks release are just acoustic versions of these same songs or alternate takes. While that's NICE, is it really necessary? If you find the 2 CD set. BUY IT...extra Indigo Girls is NICE...but, if you just find this one, since the 2 disc set is a limited edition, you'll be MORE THAN HAPPY WITH THIS ONE! It's EXCELLENT!!!

Brilliant Dream

| This Vanguard disc is a strong set from Indigo Girls. While I usually lean toward the bite in Amy Ray's songs, the best track here may be "Love of Our Lives" with the marching acoustic guitars, "We've been staring down the brilliant dream, the sun burns our eyes." "Ghost of the Gang" pumps with energy as Amy walks down Memory Lane with all of the life that happens between friends. "True Romantic" closes the set with Ray's vocals strong & moving, "Baby, I spent my only fortune on the wages of sin; So you gotta be extra forgiving." Indigo Girls' sound may be familiar, but they are creating excellent music. Enjoy! |

 Mostly more of the same from the Indigo Girls

First off, I am an Indigo Girls fan, and I own all of their albums except maybe this one and the last one. As such, I feel I have enough knowledge of their music to make a fair assessment. This album is not bad at all, and I'd really give it a 2-1/2 star rating if Amazon allowed. My problems with this are that there's really nothing as emotional as their previous work, and nothing really musically or lyrically different. I'm not always saying I need different, either, but there just wasn't enough that I hadn't already heard before.
The album opens with a rather mellow cut, "Digging for Your Dream", which is not to say that is a bad way to open an album but it just seemed a bit too far at the top. Similarly, the second track, "Sugar Tongue", had a catchy chorus, especially with Amy Ray attempting some nice falsetto, but it too, still made the album feel a bit too grounded.
The album felt like it would take off with the third track, "Love of Our Lives", which is the one song that I purchased. It was more of a rollicking tune that was one of the few that exhibited both energy and emotion. The next track, "Driver Education", seemed like a real throwaway, or a B-Side, and the rest of the album, again, while not bad, seemed like B-side material for these guys until just near the end where "Fleet of Hope" managed to have a clever melody and lyric. |
