Back to What's Good Submitted on: 2009-07-28 |

| ...I have been disappointed by some of the Rippingtons recent work but not this CD. It takes me back to the southern Med with it's spanish sounds and relaxed nature. If you want 'travelling music' to escape into then get this work and imagine the bougenvillia while sitting in the shade of a cork tree with the blue Mediterranean sun above. Just plain relaxing after an awful day. |

RUSS FREEMAN'S CREATIVITY IS AMAZING! Submitted on: 2009-07-11 |

| I WAS QUITE SURPRISED AT SOME OF THE LOW RATINGS FOR THIS ALBUM. I HAVE ALL OF THE RIPPINGTONS' ALBUMS. WHILE I CERTAINLY DON'T THINK THIS ALBUM WAS THEIR BEST, IT CERTAINLY QUALIFIES AS REPRESENTATIVE OF RUSS FREEMAN'S CONTINUING CREATIVITY. I PARTCULARLY LIKED THE SECOND HALF OF THE ALBUM. IT AMAZES ME HOW RUSS FREEMAN IS ABLE TO KEEP THE RIPPINGTON'S SIGNATURE SOUND BUT PUT A DIFFERENT TWIST ON IT FOR EACH ALBUM HE PRODUCES. ANY RIPPINGTONS' FAN (OR ANY SMOOTH JAZZ LOVER) WOULD BENEFIT FROM ADDING THIS ALBUM TO THEIR COLLECTION OF CD'S. |

| as someone who has loved some of the Ripps earlier works I find what I heard on the sample tracks to be rather bland. I've heard better and more energetic music from the Ripps but amazingly enough I'm not surprised some here gave it 5 stars. Very smooth jazz that doesn't require much thinking. I'll be skipping this release. |

Not the best, but consistent. Submitted on: 2009-06-20 |

The Rippingtons' most recent release, Modern Art, doesn't break new ground as their classic albums Moonlighting, Welcome to the St. James Club, or Curves Ahead did. But in the quest to get radio play on a shrinking number of stations, it serves its purpose. Russ Freeman is a brilliant composer and guitarist, but none of the songs allow him to 'stretch' in solos as we've become accustomed. The return of Jeff Kashiwa and his versatility is most welcome, and the addition of Bill Heller on keyboards is fabulous.
All in all, a worthy effort, but not their best. I hope to hear some of these tunes during their 2009 Modern Art tour, and perhaps we'll hear the energy that seemed lacking during this project. |

| I EXPECT MORE FROM RUSS FREEMAN! THIS ALBUM/CD WAS DONE WITH NOT ENOUGH PREPARATION OR INTENSITY. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AT LEAST ONE CUT THAT IS SO COGENT THAT YOU WANT TO GET OTHER PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO , THEN IT IS NOT A VERY GOOD ALBUM. RUSS CAN DO BETTER!! |
