Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Completely fresh!

Junior Boys are perfect mix of fresh electonic beats with oh so pleasing lyrics and vocals. I was waiting for this one for awhile and right out of the plastic wrap was pleasantly surprised. A bit short at just over 47 minutes long, but definitely worth having in the collection.

Dance-punk is so 2003, but dance-pop is so now. With Cut Copy, Crystal Castles, M83 and practically anything coming out of Sweden, 80s-sounding music is better today than it was in the 80s. Even now, with the release of their third album, the Junior Boys have never been catchy enough to fit into this group of up-and-comers. Their signature electronic formula, which carries over to LP number three, Begone Dull Care, synthesizes the values of house, dance and pop. The result is a collection of eight slow jams that sound like they've been refracted through a disco ball. The pace is always mid-tempo, meaning these cuts won't make it to the dance floor until the after-after party.

Opening track "Parallel Lines" starts the album with something of a whimper. Not until the fifth song, lead single "Hazel," do the Boys step into full-swagger stride. The track could easily be a sequel to their excellent 2006 cut "In the Morning," a lament for stunted young love. The masterful application of synths-that-mean-business propels both songs skyward.

Though each track is crafted well enough, Begone Dull Care is simply less compelling than their prior albums, especially debut Last Exit. Perhaps a result of the familiar formula losing its luster, or a relative lack of emotional heft, the six-minute songs on Begone Dull Care overplay ideas and overstay their welcome. It's difficult to say why or how Begone Dull Care could be disappointing-Junior Boys' trademark sound, still singular in 2009, permeates. But sadly, Begone Dull Care is "too dull to care" much about, which is a shame for such a talented band.

Love the Junior Boys- just can't get enough. Needless to say, I was pleased to hear about this new album! No disappointments, except for maybe the limited number of tracks. That's OK- if greats like Metallica can get away with 8 tracks per album, I'll let these guys get away with it, too.

The point, though, is this: if you're already a fan of the Junior Boys' ethereal sound, sultry lyrics, fantastically listenable blend of electro-pop, dance, down-tempo, etc., then I have no doubt this will become another hit in your book. You just can't go wrong.

If you're not familiar- check this album out! You'll be glad you did. You'll be listening to it all the way through time and time again.

As this decade draws to a close it seems very much in vogue among many electronic artists to try and recapture and update the musical sounds of what was used some 20 years before. I've listened to many bands with that aesthetic and no band I've heard of quality has done this better than Junior Boys, first with So This Is Goodbye and now even more so with Begone Dull Care.

BDC is a more relaxed musical affair from the Boys this time. Nothing here is as musically tense as past tracks like "Double Shadow", "In the Morning", or "More Than Real". The jittery percussive elements of Last Exit have been smoothed over with layers of slick keyboards and pulsating beats. BDC is a very well crafted album and Jeremy Greenspan's vocals are yet another instrument that compliments the instrumental environment almost too well (he has a voice that seems easy to get lost in the music around him).

There are only 8 songs this time around, but it doesn't need any more. The album says what it needs to say then ends without outstaying it's welcome.

My goodness, since my birth I have always suspected Junior Boys to be without question one of the greatest musicians to have ever graced humanity, and this CD proves it. If the inbetween releases (No Kinda Man, and Jackie Junior, respectively) were any clue as to the glory that would be found within this CD, those two tracks were myre preludes to this work of art. From the opening track I found my own body shifting into alternate realms, questioning my own existence and asking why I was allowed to survive long enough to enjoy this CD, and thank God I have.

This CD is leaps and bounds over So this is Goodbye, which was spectacular in its own right, and much of this CD is very distinguishable from their last, and alot closer to thier inbetween releases, which I think was a move for the better. Yet this CD still smolders with honey and that lovely desperate falsetto I have grown to love. Though the cd is "Only" (emphasis on quotes) 8 tracks in length, the depth found within each will probably take an entire life to appreciate. I cannot praise this CD enough, and there is literally not a single track on here that I despise. The cultivation and hard work poured so wonderfully into each track is clear, and the unparalleled talent of these artists has grown so much. I used to miss the original producer that worked on Last exit, and maybe I still do in some ways, but in the end, this CD is it. Wrap yourself up with a lover, and subject your atoms to this masterful work. I am astonished with the quality of this CD, and I only wish their work could be more appreciated. No Junior Boys fan should be without, and really, no lover of quality should either.

Well done Junior Boys.
