Another great album from Silversun Pickups Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

| Like Carnavas, this album grew on me after a few listens. Now, I could listen to it for a week straight and still enjoy it. It seems as if the more I listen to it actually, the more I enjoy it. Extremely pleased, and glad I bought it. |

Good but not great Submitted on: 2009-11-02 |

| I'm not a super die-hard Silversun Pickups fan but I was looking forward to this release. It's well crafted and atmospheric but not the break-out of originality that Carnavas was. Still, not disappointed that I picked this one up. 3.5 stars - and that might be a little harsh just considering how much I liked their previous release. |

There are definately secrets here this year Submitted on: 2009-11-01 |

This CD has become one of my favorites the past month. Enjoying music is very subjective. I particularly like the guitar playing and the ambiguity of the lyrics. This is a simple album, I think that if you like Panic Switch (getting a bit of radio play) and the preview clips sound good to you; there's a very strong chance this CD will be a good purchase. The preview statement isn't always good for albums; in this case, there are no surprises beyond those clips.
Across the board, I enjoy all the songs. I particularly like them played in the order on the CD. There's a bit of a story and rhythm that builds with the 10 tracks. Although every song is clearly from the same group and there's a certain consistency; the album doesn't feel redundant. This past week I've listened to this CD around 10 times, and have not grown tired of the sound.
The influences? This is on the slightly softer side of alternative rock. But it has a sharper edge than standard pop music. I heard a fair amount of the Zutons, (Who Killed...... The Zutons). The lead singer's voice in Panic Switch had this small special sound that I love in Sarah McLachlan. To me the two singers have very similar voices - maybe it is the tone. I was very surprised to find out that the lead singer is male. He certainly does not have a masculine voice.
The part I really struggle with, the comparison to Smashing Pumpkins. This CD is so much more mainstream compared to the harder sharper edge of the Pumpkins. I have no clue what Silversun Pickups is singing about, it's totally clear to me what the Pumpkins are singing about. The choice of rhythm, instruments, and arrangement is just totally different to me. My only frame of reference is Swoon and a bigger percentage of the Pumpkins.
I like the ambiguity of this album. The lead singer swallows a lot of lyrics, so they are impossible to understand. But yet, others are crystal clear. I have read a few of the lyrics and still cannot figure out what this band is singing about. Is this some gay inside joke, I just don't get? Is it some kind of drug thing? Is it just simple love or angst stories? I have no clue. The very first song with crystal clear singing, 'I will tell you a secret. Make this perfectly clear. There's no secrets this year.' Sung in a tone of 'I'm the puppet master, you are nobody, and I'll show you.' I don't get it, and I like that I don't get it.
The arrangements to me are just very pleasing. I really like the lead guitar playing. It is strong, solid and complex. The guitarist is excellent.
Overall, this is an album that I like very much. I haven't spent as much time with a single album in a very long time, and I'm still enjoying this.

Silversun, Silversun, Where art Thou? Submitted on: 2009-10-27 |

| So, I love every second of every minute of Carnavas, but Swoon doesn't do it for me AT ALL. Not one track. Don't get me wrong, I tried my hardest to embrace at least one song, but simply couldn't . . . perhaps it's because I was looking for anything resembling the full-on rock-out moments on Caravan - pure genius, but sorely lacking on Swoon. |

Swoon by Silversun Pickups
"A get away from all the other music on the radio," is one way to describe the album, Swoon, by Silversun Pickups. You will hardly ever hear any of there songs on the radio, unless you are listening to a specific radio station. They're sound is very different than what people are used to listening to when they turn the car on and hear pop and hip-hop. This album is good album to listen to in the morning when you're waking up. The Silversun Pickups have a softer sound to their music. However, some of their songs get a little faster paced and more have more of a rock sound to them. This album is a good one to have if you are an alternative music fan, like myself. If you've heard one or two of their other songs and liked them, you should definitely get this CD because you'll for sure like the rest of the songs on the album. They have somewhat of the same sound to them, but they're all different in their own way. I believe that you should really like alternative music though to get this CD. If you don't like that type of music, then this CD is not for you. However, if you would like to experience a different genre of music, then I recommend this album for you. I definitely think you should buy this album if you are into alternative music. |
