Neil Young rocks!! it's hard to think of him as "old" or not relating to today's world .This is another example of why Neil is probably the most enduring artist over the last 40 odd years.Five stars for this....after the first 2/3 listens I thought,o.k. maybe 3 stars...but true to a lot of Neil's work, after 5/6 spins with the volume up a few notches,WHAMMM....I reckon this is just a great listen.
Others have run thru the tracks,so I wont bore you with my details. But I didn't have any real fav. tracks.
"Worlds collide" gets you off to a great rockin start...Johnny Magic is probably closer to some Young grunge from the nineties."Cough up the Bucks" is fair commentary on the stuffed up financial situation of today's world.and Neil throws in a top ballad,"Light a candle",that is a great listen.
As usual,Neil will have his detractors, and of course not everyone appreciates the same music...but I can say I love both sides of Neil...the ballads and the hard rock.Somewhere in between (as in the eighties),maybe some of his music was a bit average..but isn't that why he's still around, change can be good or not so good.
Anyway, buy this latest from Neil....listen more than a few times, turn up the volume a bit...you may be able to appreciate this after all.

Fork in the road being Young's 2009 release is an alright album but nothing more. If one compares it to great releases such as Rust Never Sleeps then one is left with a generic rock album with ordinary lyrics. Many of the critics also gave the album less then stellar reviews. The Times and The Guardian giving it one and two stars respectively. I do not agree that the album is that bad and I am in more in line with Rolling Stone and I also give it a 3 out of 5. Still Young can do so much better and some of the songs sound forced like Just Singing a Song. Young can do so much better and next album is hopefully better. 3/5.
Good Old Neil

I wanted to give this a 5 star rating for the passion behind it (mostly to his retrofitted Lincoln Continental bio/electric 100 mpg dream car), but this isn't great classic Young (like the older Everyone Knows..., After the Gold Rush and Rust Never Sleeps, and more recent Greendale and Chrome Dreams II are). It is however, fun and fresh and current (who else is writing a whole CD worth of songs to their hybrid car?!). My first impression wasn't too great (more like a 3 star CD), but this whole thing has grown on me, and a few songs I just love ("Just Singing a Song" ...won't change the world..., the state of the economy "Cough up the Bucks", the tender and spiritual "Light A Candle" and the concluding title track which could be an anthem to our current National Depression... with the chorus "there's a bail-out coming but it's not for me".), and so I average it to 4 stars.

What I love about Mr Young is he lives up to his name, and keeps it fresh and unpolished, and doesn't really care if you like it, but, he obviously does and I find this infectious. This is much more than his passionate but forgettable Living With War protest album, it's a life and future and grassroots affirming album.

PS. The 4 rough, hand held DVD tracks are great (humerous little glimpses into his life and mind). And the live cover of "A Day In the Life" is worth the price alone.
still rocking after all these years...

With an artist as prolific as Neil it's sort of pointless to compare recordings, the question should be, can he still rock? Can he still contribute? Absoutely! This recording has a garage like recording feel to it. Sort of like Neil wrote down some lyrics on a dirty napkin, got a few friends together in a barn and recorded it. I love the bare feeling to this record. Some good rocking tunes!
Sorry Neil but ...

I've been a Neil Young fan for his entire career. I bought this CD because I love the title cut, but that's where it falls off the cliff. The rest of the songs were weak & his voice was forced at best. The mixing levels of instrumnets to voice was even off in a couple of songs. I have to reluctantly give this one a weak 2 stars. Sorry Neil; I love you but ...
