Refreshing and good tracks from start to finish...

I had not heard of Chrisette Michele, until I heard her track on the radio and fell in love with her voice. I am DOUBLY pleased with the entire CD, which is rare. Normally, you get a couple of tracks worth listening to here and there, but this CD is definitely worth buying. Track #11 has quickly become a personal favorite of mine. But then...I love the ENTIRE CD!

Great voice, classy songs; however, I would have loved for there to be more songs written by the artist. She has a beautiful and distinct voice that I think should really be showcased. I was not feeling her hair on the cover though. I would certainly say you won't be disappointed with this outing from Chrisette Michelle. I am looking forward for more work from this artist.

Chrisette Michele's debut introduced a truly talented original singer/songwriter to the r&b world. Her voice blew me away and the original arrangements & heartfelt lyrics of her songs made me a true fan. She got a lot of initial attention because of the hooks she provided on Jay-Z & Nas' tracks and luckily began touring shortly after her debut which widened her audience.

It was a smart move to pair Chrisette with Ne-Yo this time around because there is a distinctive sound to his songs - he has that golden touch right now and helps make extremely radio-friendly songs that get played. Two negative comments I have is that Chrisette didn't write as much on this disc but the two tracks that she did: FRAGILE & MR. RIGHT, have the same kind of "spark" & originality displayed on her debut and secondly on a few of the tracks it sounds as if Chrisette's vocals are lowered and smoothed out to the point where the background vocals sound louder & stronger. I noticed that on Fantasia's sophomore cd this was done also - I guess because both of them are such strong distinctive vocalists, producers try to water down their singing style so that it appeals to a mass crowd.

The accompanying dvd is a nice treat - because Chrisette doesn't get the "diva pr treatment" from her label I haven't seen too many interviews regarding her start in music or her approach to her albums so this interview is a nice way to get to know her. On it she talks about the production of the album, working with Ne-Yo, what each song means to her, how she learned to play the piano and also sings snippets of a few tracks live and finally performs spoken word readings of the poems included in her album booklet.

I've had the chance to listen to EPIPHANY over the past few months so much of it has grown on me - it's a strong collection of songs that could again garner Grammy attention for Chrisette (keeping my fingers crossed!) Of the 12 tracks my favorites are:

WHAT YOU DO - this track is so infectiously catchy that it's impossible to hate it

EPIPHANY (I'M LEAVING) - features her unique vocal styling and is one of those tracks that I did not like initially but grew to love the more I heard it

BLAME IT ON ME - strong simmering ballad of a woman who is fed up and tells her man, "blame everything that went wrong on me...just go"

ANOTHER ONE - although so dissimilar, this song reminds me of IRREPLACEABLE

ON MY OWN - another female anthemic track about a break-up

ALL I EVER THINK ABOUT - another extremely radio-friendly track

I'M OKAY - another dramatic slow burning break up song

PORCELAIN DOLL - a grower with independent woman lyrics

I love this Sophomore effort!!! Chrisette is so refreshingly unique in a sea of musical mediocrity. I was fortunate enough to check out her Soundstage Concert on VH1 Soul where she performed several songs from this album. She tore into "All I Ever Think About" with so much intensity and depth that I was amazed. She sounds better live than she even does on her CD. I can put on this entire CD and just let it play - how often can you say that these days? Her sound is both mature and yet refreshingly modern - ahead of her time in my opinion. Her themes are timeless, delivered with a fresh approach. Far, far better than any of her contemporaries. Even the heavily promoted ones we can never seem to escape (who shall remain nameless). But I dare BET to let her perform this year, just bring in some new blood for a change and everyone will see what those of us who have her music have already come to know for ourselves. By the way, she actually stays dressed in her videos and presents herself as someone to be taken seriously - not just an object to simply be used and toyed with for some man's sexual gratification.

Honestly, in my opinion if you put her onstage with the well-known female artists of her generation (Ciara, Keri Hilson, Keisha Cole, Rihanna, etc), just place them all onstage together Chrisette will blow them away with her talent, intensity and unique delivery. Kind of like this generation's Patti LaBelle, in my humble opinion of course! It's just nice for a breath of fresh air and I can't forget a shout out to Ne-Yo for bringing out some of Chrisette's best work. Great collaboration! My personal favorites:

"Epiphany", "Blame It On Me", "All I Ever Think About", "Porcelain Doll". Chrisette, I just want you to keep it up 'cause your fans would like to see more of these high standards next go-round. You're in a class all by yourself.
SIMPLY FABULOUS!

I first heard the song Epiphany and was immediately drawn in, so I ordered the CD, not really expecting to enjoy the rest of the whole thing, as so often happens with other artists. Usually, I'm lucky if I end up liking two tracks out of an entire CD. Well, I was surprised. This young lady can not only sing, but her style pulls from a whole lot more than can be identified all at once. Each song is different and not like some where each songs sounds exactly like the last one. In an ocean of artists who are all vying to get center stage, it's nice to hear from someone who can stand alone. Her songs range from soulful to sassy, a touch of the feminist in there saying, "watch out!" and yet the soft and gentle side saying "I'm vulnerable, too!". All the more surprising from one so young, I would except the range and depth of such music to come from a more experienced singer. Hints of Diana Ross, Billie Holiday and Lauren Hill all swirled into one, but neither overpowering the other. At the end you're left with a lovely taste in your mouth, like a familiar candy you once sucked as a child, but now with a distinct and new flavor of its own. Sweet. This is going to keep me going for a long time.
