Lynyrd Skynyrd Once Again Rise To The Occasion
Submitted on: 2009-07-27
This CD is yet another example of how Lynyrd Skynyrd rose to the occasion live in between the loss of guitarist Ed King and the arrival of guitarist Steve Gaines. This CD is longer (66 minutes) and, unlike the previous one, was probably a complete show. Despite issues with sound quality, this CD, with remaining guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington playing both King's parts AND theirs in order to weave everything into a harmonious whole, and succeeding marvelously at it, shows just what was lost when the plane went down and also stands as yet another example of a Ronnie-era live Skynyrd recording.
4 1/2 stars. Nothing we haven't heard already, but it's still great

Yes, there is some terrific live Skynyrd from the mid-70s out there already, and "mid-level" fans who already own "One More From The Road" or the wonderful "Free Bird" soundtrack need not hurry. But there is a lot to like here all the same.

This is the original Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded at the short-lived Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco on March the 7th, 1976. Eleven songs and a little over an hour...the original concert may well have been longer, but what's here is excellent either way.
The presence of a group of backing singers goes almost unnoticed, except for the unfortunate but rather brief "aaah aaah aaah"-mishap halfway through "Sweet Home Alabama", and the band itself is firing on all cylinders. The rhythm section is rough, tough and greasy, the sinewy guitars interlock with deadly precision, and we get terrific renditions of songs like "Cry For The Bad Man", a dense, powerful "Gimme Back My Bullets", and J.J. Cale's "I Got The Same Old Blues Again", all of them from the recently released "Bullets" album.

Again, this is not a must-have purchase. The set list is rather predictable, there are probably some songs missing, and apparently some listeners are griping about the sound quality (although I can't imagine why). But this is still a terrific hour of gritty rock n' roll played by a great band in their prime. Any fan of the Skynyrd boys should be able to find something to groove on here.
Raw and Vintage.....and FINALLY on CD!

After seeing archive footage of this concert in black and white, I was always curious if it would be put on a CD. Finally, it is available.

From start to finish, its nothing but classic Skynyrd sound.

For die hard fans, this is a must have to your collection!

Gary Rossington and Allen Collins really show there talent on this one, and Ronnie Van Zant's vocals are strong and powerful.
Great archive for hardcore Skynyrd fans

This CD is a treasure for hardcore Skynyrd fans who can't get enough of the old Ronnie-era version of the group. Most of the material here is featured on One More From The Road, but it's interesting to listen to how the band arranged the songs without Steve Gaines, who was to join the band shortly after this concert was recorded.

The "authorized bootleg" is a clever way to excuse the inferior sound quality of this recording. I'm guessing that all was available was a stereo mix straight from the board, as tbe mixing is pretty uneven here. There isn't enough bass guitar, Ronnie's voice is bone-dry with no reverb, there is too much kick drum, and the voices of the Honkettes are not mixed evenly. If there had been a multi-track mix to work with, this could have been tweaked into a fine remaster.

Still, a nice addition to your collection of vintage Skynyrd!
OK as a souvenir

As one who was at this show I'll gladly attest to how phenomonal it was to be there that night! Skynyrd was fanfreakigntastic! Their performance that night still ranks in the top 4 of my all-time best concerts. While I'm glad to have this available as a token of that powerful show, as product, this has some serious flaws.

There are three main things to be aware of here:
1. Sound quality. Even considering the source and the era, this is marginal, at best. Period.
2. The show is incomplete. More songs are included at Wolfgang's (I'm not sure that's the complete show, either), there is plenty of room on the disc, so why short us? I would think that, if they want us to spend money on this, they'd give us tracks here that aren't available at Wolfgang's.
3. The show is available to listen to for free at Wolfgang's, so keep that in mind when considering actually purchasing this.

I was there, the show was fantastic and a lot of that energy comes through in this release. I bought it and, despite the flaws, am glad to have it - especially at the intro price of $7.99. However, it's clearly an inferior product to One More.

It's a great idea, I sincerely hope they continue this release program, but I do suggest they either keep the prices DOWN or improve the product to justify the higher price.
