Another good one! Submitted on: 2009-11-03 |

A few years ago I was looking for a "new" Progressive group similar to Yes, ELP etc. [...]. Who knew there were so many? My faith having been restored in the plethora of the genre, I took a chance within the so-called Neo sub-category. IQ, hmmm... What the hell. Bought Dark Matter and was pleasantly surprised.
The opening keyboard chords hooked me immediately. So too has Frequency. They have taken (borrowed) many influences from those that have gone before, added their own ideas and with incremental, but steady, progress (progressive?) and we get the latest incarnation of IQ. Peter Nicholls' voice... although a bit thin, I can understand what he's singing! New keyboardist? New drummer? Who can tell? With Mike Holmes on guitar and John Jowitt on steady bass, IQ sounds just as good as ever.
Frequency & Dark Matter. Start there and work back. Oh, and the concert on the second disc is good too. What a deal!

I flew 800 miles to see this album performed live Submitted on: 2009-11-01 |

I put my money and time where my mouth is.
I think this is the best IQ album ever.
The title Track leads off the album and is a solid Prog song, it starts of with the sterotypical movietone news and morse code samples then has some great melodies and changes.
Life Support reminds me how great Hacket's influence was in genesis and is a great linkiing song to the next epic.
Stonger than Friction has super strong melodies and must be listened to in conjunction with One Fatal Mistake which is a nice ballad which reminds me of Genesis's after glow as you could add it to any song an get a great epic ending.
Ryker Skies reminds me a bit of the Calling all stations album or maybe even Kino's Pictures.
The Province has one of the best guitar solo's I have ever heard. It is right up there with Comfortably Numb.
The Closer is another nice ballad and ends the album well.

Predictable but enjoyable Submitted on: 2009-10-08 |

IQ doesn't surprise or break any new ground here, but they deliver a solid performance in this collection of likeable and listenable compositions. There are many musical phrases and lines reminiscent of IQ's previous work. Peter Nicholls' voice has grown from being a liability in the band's early years to an asset.
The bonus DVD gives us a chance to see and hear the band live and perform remarkably faithful versions of some of their signature work. The video quality is so-so, as it was filmed in a dark club, but the audio is good. |

Melodic rock - promising Submitted on: 2009-09-13 |

| Most regretfully there is always a cultural gap between the generations. Many of us - from previous days - shall recognize immediately in "Frequency" a pale mellow copy of "Kashmir". I would suggest to listen to LedZep original first. Otherwise - yes, beautiful music, confident performance. Beautiful and sweet voice. Quiet OK - if you've never heard anything else |

MORE THAN I EXPEXTED! Submitted on: 2009-08-29 |

As soon as I see the album came out, I jumped in and these guys are like a good wine, they aged very well, the sound is clear and as a true progressive band, they deliver. Frequency reminds me to Subterranea, is a well crafted and with an excellent production. If you are familiar with Porcupine Tree, Riverside, RPWL and the like, you won't be disappointed with this one. IQ are one of my favorites and every new release stands up with a high quality, go and check this out, I strongly recommend Subterreanea and Dark Matter too.
Five starts well deserved! |
