Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

3 riff wonders
Submitted on: 2009-09-30
I use to dig some of Obituaries stuff back in the day, and even some six feet under. But i realized that i was just listening to the same riff over and over, in a different variation. These riffs could have been played by most young teens or kids who can pick up a guitar and strum. Hense why i don't "dig" them anymore, at least Cannibal Corpse are amazing musicians, i really don't know how this band has stayed around all these years. Lots of die hards, or retards, perhaps!!??
Best album to date

This is a great album, better than the last one by a margin. A bit more experimental than before. I hope they keep it up and experiment a bit more on their next album.
Very Tardy.......but better late than never!!!!

I'm having a good time with the latest from Obituary. Dont expect another 'Slowly We Rot' kind of disc. However it is better than the last two. With that in mind, this one is just a strange one. Very doomish sounding at times and at other times it's hard to put a finger on the sound. But dont get me wrong,if your familiar, you'll know it's the Tardy Brothers right away. Darkest Day may not get the nod for album of the year and it certainly isnt' one of their best, but it is a enjoyable opus with some freakishly original moments...like Obituary throwing down some melody on the lead guitar and some tribal drumming, beleive it or not. The only srub on this disc that I can think of is that there are no lyrics included. Some of the tunes need them so I can figure out what the hell John is going on about....it's just a weird album. But a good one none-the-less.
Another afterthought that chugs along endless and without purpose

There is always a problem when a band takes the [...] comments of supposed fans seriously, it sometimes ends up screwing up the product. Both "Frozen in Time" and "Xecutioner's Return" were more than decent efforts, especially the latter which gave that band a new guitarist who added another (welcome) dimension to the band. Apparently, some fans didn't like Ralph Santolla's guitar musings either on the album or in concert.

We know find ourselves with "Darker Days" an album that chugs along endlessly with maybe one or two decent solos pushed into the background. The band seems to actively be channeling such duds as "World Demise" or the even more pitiful "Back from the Dead". The songs are played at this kind of hardcore-meets-alternative-rock pace without any catchy hooks or solos or even dirge parts that this band was know for a la "Cause of Death" or "Slowly We Rot". You listen to a song that sounds like it's been playing for ten minutes and realize the track is only three. The only decent songs are the first track and maybe 'This Life' as well as some of the tracks that were already previously included in the "Left to Die" EP -so those don't really count. Really, I'm missing the constant mid-paced tempos with a slow dirge part here or there with an awesome solo (hint: there are no tracks on the "Evil Ways" level here.)

A lame product from a band that could better. Let Ralph Santolla be Ralph Santolla and concentrate on making well-written-to-the-point songs.
Simple With Mixed Results

While this albums has the classic Obituary sound,I felt the final product left me somewhat underwhelmed. This album is strange in that it's strengths are also it's weaknesses. First of all is the mix. I was glad to hear that the album did not sound like the typical modern Andy Sneap metal record. It was refreshing in that way.It had more of a 90's sound to it; nice and raw, without alot of production. On the other hand, the mix was horrible. In some places, the drums sounded absolutely aweful, like they ran it through some kind of cheapo reverb effect. Also, the lead guitars sounded way above the mix. Which brings me to my second point. Being a fan of lead guitar, Ralph's solos were a high point of the album;very technical. On the other hand, the solos seemed like an after thought; compared to the James Murphy's leads on Cause of Death, which seemed to be part of the song. Finally, it is nice to see a heavy band break down into some grooves, but the album is overly simplistic and predictable. This is not a bad album, but it did not leave much of an impression.
