An Introduction to Kris Allen Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |
|
| Kris Allen surprises with his self-titled debut. Not only does he explore sides of himself that he had not revealed while on American Idol, but he also stretches himself vocally. The album is well-rounded, featuring upbeat songs like "Live Like We're Dying" and the funky "Can't Stay Away", as well as heart-tugging ballads like "The Truth" and "Bring It Back". It has something for everyone. Fans of Kris's performances of "Falling Slowly" and "Ain't No Sunshine" on American Idol will enjoy the bluesy "Is It Over" and "I Need to Know", while those outside of the AI bubble will like "Before We Come Undone" and "Alright With Me". This is an incredibly solid album from an AI winner. There are no album fillers here - every song has its own distinct charm, and Kris shows off his songwriting chops, especially on his personal favorite and only sole songwriting credit "Red Guitar", a song which he had written before his journey on American Idol began. Every song on the album seems to be made for radio, and Kris's voice shines strong on this record. It was very apt for him to self-title it because Kris's stamp is on this album. Fans of Damien Rice, John Mayer, The Fray, OneRepublic, Gavin DeGraw and James Morrison will enjoy this record. |

Gets better and better with each play Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |

The first time I heard the album, I wasn't really too excited. However, after playing it a couple of times, I can definitely say that I am really enjoying it. There is a nice combination of up tempo and ballads. It seems to be very personal to him. I think men will appreciate "It's Written all over my face" a perspective on relationships you don't often hear defended in song. I also really like "The Truth" which is heartbreaking. "Alright with Me" could use another verse, but I dare anyone not to tap their toe to it! "Bring it Back" is also very moving.
Again - I would tell people to give it a chance, it really grew on me! |

A solid debut from an Idol winner Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |

| I was a huge fan of Kris on American Idol, and this album is everything I hoped for and more. From the melancholy ballads to the infectious, upbeat pop rock tunes, every song is a winner like Kris! This is already one of my favorite albums of the year. |

Disappointing Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |

| Droll, lacking passion and in essence a HUGE disappointment. I was a big fan of Kris during ht season and was happy he won. I expected great things from him. What I got was less than satisfying and looking for my money back. Maybe next time. |

Just right Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |

| This CD is as exactly as Kris was on the show which is good. His best trait as a singer seems to be his ability to be emotive on each song, especialy those with angst. Pretty awesome quality to have since he seems like a happy-go-lucky guy. The only two songs I'm not wild over are Red Guitar and I Need to Know. I don't dislike them, I just prefer others. There is something about the song Alright with Me that reminds me of a Brandi Carlile/Buddy Holly hybrid. Go figure. I'm anxious to see how the tongue twister Live Like We're Dying will be performed live. It's a good, solid CD and I'm glad I bought it now rather than waiting for the gift giving season. And I am so very glad that his version of Heartless is the bonus track. I wish they'd also included his rendition of Ain't No Sunshine. |
