Solid sophomore effort Submitted on: 2009-11-16 |

| I just received "Breathing Underwater" (promptly as usual, thank Amazon!), and popped it into the car for a listen on the way to work. I must admit I was a bit cautious, knowing that Marie had departed somewhat from her signature acoustic sound from "Unfold." However, I was pleasantly surprised with this album; it is not overproduced, by any means. The songs are a series of finely crafted pop gems, carried by Marie's beautiful & strong voice, with some surprise harmonic progressions. A solid sophomore effort! |

Sounding Different But Good Submitted on: 2009-11-12 |

| Digby's first album, Unfold, was very well done, and mostly acoustic. I actually enjoy and listen to 8 songs from that album (don't care for Umbrella, Stupid For You and Girlfriend). Many people have written reviews and complained about her changing her style to an upbeat tempo in the second album. At first I was a little disappointed, but found that in listening to it many times, several of the songs grew to become strong favorites. Machine, Feel, Know You By Heart and Love With a Stranger are brilliantly produced and sound great. I've taken 8 or 9 songs from each of her albums (plus What I've Done, from an EP) and alternated them on a CD so you get a variation of acoustic and upbeat songs. I predict that she will become a star to all those that appreciate very good music. |

Not worse than Unfold but a bit different... Submitted on: 2009-10-28 |

Marie Digby's "Breathing Underwater" is a bit of a departure from her previous album "Unfold." Relative to her previous album, Breathing Underwater is much more produced; Unfold was very organic and was more similar to her Youtube persona. I feel like this album sounds a lot more synthetic and I have a hard time imagining Marie sitting down with just a keyboard or a guitar and singing these songs.
Musically, Breathing Underwater reminds me of Jessica Simpson's first two albums (produced in 1999 and 2001). The lyrics and composition are somewhat reminiscent of the late-90s pop. I don't think that these previous two statements are a slight at all as I love late-90s pop. However, if you are looking for a record that is of the same vein as Unfold, you might need to look elsewhere.
All in all, Breathing Underwater is a nice album, but to me, it is a step in a different direction for Marie. |

Good Album Submitted on: 2009-10-14 |

Breathing Underwater is just a solid album. It didn't blow me away, but I do enjoy it. If you like other female singer-songwriters, it's well worth the listen.
I rate an album by How-Long-It-Stays-In-Rotation. It's getting only three stars, because it is already out of my commute rotation, and I doubt it will make it back in. |

Marie wins me over this time Submitted on: 2009-10-14 |

I normally levitate towards music with more "meaning" or "feeling" and after a great collection of Alanis, Tori Amos, Shakira (latin albums), Marc Anthony etc I find sometimes I just want music to lift me up out of my blues e.g. Lady Gaga, BEP etc.
I saw Marie's YouTube videos and liked her voice (and looks) and when her debut album came out I went to the store to buy it. I listened to the whole piece and though I really wanted to like it, decided it wasn't worth spending on; it's a typical new artist indie hippie guitar wielding soulful (then) newbie like Colbie Caillat or a Vanessa Carlton type.
I was looking for soulful talented vocals and well engineered music; the beats, the melody, I wanted to hear sweat spent engineering the tracks, some polish and music that sounds it was worked on thoroughly before released in an album. I'm surprised and happy to hear this second album is nothing like the first one & fits my bill :) I haven't bought it yet but I like all the tracks previewed her on amazon and I'm going to go out and get this happy upbeat music.
If I have to comment on the direction this artist has taken with her sound, I will say it's similar to Mariah Carey's direction with her new album-- more engineered sound (as is the trend in 2009), but the vocals are authentic tried and tested market worthy Mariah. |
