Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Disapointed
Submitted on: 2009-11-24
Oh my! I have been waiting for years for Maxell to return and I am so very happy that he has. Now as far as this CD, I have to admit, I was not impressed. I felt it lacked his typical "luster" and "passion". I wrote it off to him getting back into the "biz" again and being a little rusty or maybe new writers or writer's block. I can ONLY hope that his next CD will be like his older music...Please bring back the "soulful" Maxwell and I hope we don't have to wait as long as we did for this one! We miss you!
Not Great,Not Bad...Just Good?

This hurts me as I type this I(TRULY)am a fan of Maxwells
music(always have been & always will be) but this 'comeback'
album falls way short, IMO. I so wanted to adore BSN like I do
all of his previous albums, but this is not his best by far. Truth be told,
Bad Habits is the only song that has that M signature to it.The rest seems too
forced & at times I cant find the groove that he is known for. I will take this
one for the MaxLuv Team, but I hope the follow up is more to his standards..Either way,
I still LOVE me some M & you cant deny the Brothas talent..BSN is better than nothing??
A Worthwhile Comeback

If it had to take him all this time to make his next three albums, the wait was long but it was worth it. I'm really glad to hear one of my influences singing and making fantastic music again. This album is just as good as his previous albums, but it's different in the sound -- yet consistent with Maxwell's noticeable lyricism. He's a grown man on this one! I have not been disappointed.
The best track on the album is...

...the intro track, which kinda sucks. Bad Habits comes in so strong, that the rest of the album has to live up to that and nothing that comes after is stronger (or as strong) in my opinion. Cold comes in abruptly, and you can't quite place a finger on its feel. However, this one can sneak up on you and be a favorite if you read the lyrics as it floats on by (and it may require repeated listens to fully appreciate it like it did with me). Then in comes Pretty Wings, and although it is a favorite on the disc, it's still not a strong first single nor is it a great song. The chorus is just too prance-y and overall, the song as a whole feels like it could be stronger. Help Somebody tries so hard to be thoughtful, and it partially works. However, before the song is over, I find myself wanting to skip it over. I think it's the repetitive chorus.

Now onto the other half of the disc.

Stop The World succeeds more than it fails, and serves as an intimate escape cause, "We about to stop the world tonight, We're about to love, we ain't got no worries, no battles...". Then comes my other favorite track (the second best, in my opinion) Love You, which simmers in all the right spots, is a lyrical keeper and can be put on repeat. Fistful Of Tears is up next and the verses are decent but the chorus feels like Maxie boy is just going through the motions. Playing Possum is pretty much stripped down to nice vocals, a guitar and some wonderful, melancholy sax playing. This serves as the last official track before...Phoenix Rise hits the scene as the swan song, and only instrumental on the album. It's solid but in addition to it, I wish there were 2 tracks proceeding it so this album could feel more complete.

However, with that said, this disc isn't bad. On initial listen I found a song or two that I hadn't heard previously that kinda struck a cord but basically, the experience in one word was "UNDERWHELMING". But with some more plays, I find that it's solid throughout and will get more plays from me in the future via iPod.

Bad Habits - 4.5 stars. (closer to a 4.25, but I don't grade like that anymore; too uneven.)
Cold - 4 stars.
Pretty Wings - 3.5 stars. (closer to a 3.75)
Help Somebody - 3 stars.

Stop The World - 4 stars.
Love You - 4 stars.
Fistful Of Tears - 3 stars. (closer to a 3.25)
Playing Possum - 4 stars.
Phoenix Rise - 3.5 stars.

Raw Score: 3.722222222

Final Grade: 3.5 stars.

end note: This isn't CD of 2009 or anything, but it's pretty solid. However, something tells me, just from listening to the samples last month, that Now, his 3rd album, which I will purchase before the end of the year, will reign superior. Maxwell has talent: He sings quite well, he writes and even co-produces which some wannabe artists only wish they could achieve. But this CD isn't without its faults. I just want to let you know that before you decide on it or not. Hope this review helps someone, whether they are pondering the thought of getting the disc or just downloading some tracks.
