Best album of the year Submitted on: 2009-10-23 |

At least for me anyway. Jay is an incredible song writer and since he got over his little bout with pretension on some of his earlier albums, he continues to lead the alt-country landscape with truly midwestern songs. Nothing wrong with that. I assume he is making an allusion to Brautigan with Central American Dust( Dust American Dust) and that's okay by me. He's my favorite writer also.
Jukebox of Steel is a classic and well, every song is so strong it hurts. It's by far his best album, loose, tight.
It has a couple awkward lyrical moments where he tries to shovel a phrase in so far it hurts the song, but thats okay. It's only on a couple tracks.
He's reached a point in his career where his songs just transcend to that extra level great songwriters always get to. Let's hope it continues. |

Great Album Submitted on: 2009-09-20 |

| I have one other Son Volt album; maybe 10 years old. That album had about 3 cuts I really liked, the rest I considered mediocre. In my opinion, there is not one bad track on the album. I don't buy or listen to music as much as I did in my youth, but this one is played and enjoyed quite frequently! |

Back to Form Submitted on: 2009-09-12 |

| I'm both a Son Volt and Wilco fan, as well as being an Uncle Tupelo fan. I took no sides in the breakup and listened to both sides solo (you know what I mean) efforts, and both were valid (I own every Wilco and every Son Volt record along with every Uncle Tupelo record). This is definitely Son Volt getting back to form. I love his experimental solo stuff (especially Sebastopol), but I've always felt Jay needed a band rather than tracking. This album is a true refresher and a delight. It makes me happy that Jay is making albums I can say I like again. Good job Jay and the boys. |

Biased Submitted on: 2009-08-11 |

| I was at a life changing crossroads when I fist got Trace and quite frankly put as much faith in the words of Jay's first three son volt albums as I do the 3 main gosphels in the new testemant and that is how powerful those albums are. This is along the the lines of Straightaways and is very good. And even though he and jeff Tweedy were the driving forces behind Uncle Tupelo, you will never hear one critic utter the name of Jay Farrar or SonVolt. Shameful. |
