| U God is one of the original 9 Wu Tang bangers.Since the 90s, Wu has continued to bring bangin hiphop influenced by the brutal realities of the Projects of NYC.This album continues that tradtion with bangin, razor-sharp lyrics like Train Tussle and bass heavy, gritty music like Stomp Da Roach and Hips. Fans of Old Styled Wu Tang albums like the 1st Cuban Linx will love all of the tracks. |

You really have to like his style... Submitted on: 2009-09-08 |

to like this album. His rhymes aren't bad but the rhythms of the lyrics can be monotonous sometimes. I've listened to a bunch of wu-tang before a lot of Rza, Gza, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface, & ODB with a little Masta Killa, Killah Priest thrown in. These guys can switch up the rhythms and reverse way the words drop to the beats, or sometimes they drag the lyrics so that the words can jump the gaps betweens beats, or they compress the words so they fit inside the beats in an interesting way. And then on top of that, they use amazing images in telling their stories. Nothing U-God says or does is really mind blowing.
On this album, the lyrics have the same rhythm through most of the tracks. The hooks drag on and on. And the baselines are sometimes boring. Some songs are have good baselines but they miss on the rhymes & rhythms. Overall its not a bad album. It just isn't as imaginative as some of the work from other wu-artists. |

Honest review from a Wu die-hard - Guide to favorite tracks, there are a few classics yo! Submitted on: 2009-09-06 |

I've been buying Wu albums for since The 36 Chambers, but unlike many die-hard Wu-fans I call it like they are to me.
So I often find some LP's to be one of my very favorite, while they may not be all the most popular. Golden Arms Redemption is one of my favorite Wu albums, "Turbo Charge" alone is one of my favorite hip-hop tracks, but after U-God released Mr. Excitement I was so disgusted with him that I pretty much had no intention to ever litsen to any of his solo lps, yet alone buy them.
After much hesitation, and online positive reviews, I bought the album, Dopium, and it's definitely worth it, but it ain't Gold all around.
This album is a mix of really good tracks that match U-God's style, and others that simply make me wanna skip them and never go back due to fear that even garbage may grow on you. It feels like he tries miserably to make clubs joints, but they lack focus, congruity, and hook.
I'm not going to spend too much time talking about the best cameos, beats, and lyrics, it's up to you to choose, but I can tell you that this is a 3.5 album, that doesn't really deserves a full download, but it does have a few gems.
Quick track ratings (out of 5), *best trax, the numbers I skip are the tracks I completely dislike, so I ain't gonna bother:
1. Train Trussle - 5* (love it, the hook hurts it a little, Ghostface gives it steroids)
2. God Is Love - 2 (poor hook, and generic production)
3. Stomp Da Roach - 5* (instant classic)
5. Cocaine - 4 (great track but feels generic)
6. Magnum Force - 5* (so addictive)
8. Wu-Tang - 5 (Meth blazes it with iron lungs)
9. Dopium - 5* (instant classic; U-God at his best)
11. New Classic - 4.5 (should be the intro track)
12. Stomp Da Roach REMIX - 5* (if you like trip-hop/electronica, break dance, and DJ' remixes--gotta get that, instant classic: it reminds of The Chemical Brothers track featuring Q-Tip)
13. Dopium REMIX - 3 (almost but not quite)

| I'm really impressed with the new album by U-god, Dopium. Any doubts that you have about U-god as an MC will be gone after you hear this. His lyrics are in top form and reminds me of his classic verses on earlier Wu Tang albums. The production also really shines on this. Just about every song has an amazing beat. You also have a bunch of great cameos form Wu Tang members, as well as a few songs that U-god carries by himself. The guest appearances give great variety to the album. I haven't been into many of the newer Wu Tang releases, but this is up there with the classic stuff. |
