A neglected composer's beautiful music back to life! Submitted on: 2009-09-11 |

Leó Weiner (1885-1960), a famous Hungarian composer in the beginning of the 20ieth century, never established the same level of international recognition as his contemporary Bartók. However he remained a much-respected national figure in Hungary. He also taught music at the Liszt Academy from 1912 until his death, shifting more and more from composing music to teaching. He published all together about fifty works. His many pupils included famous musicians such as Antal Doráti, Georg Solti, János Starker, Tibor Varga, and many more. Among other honors he was declared an "Eminent Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic" in 1953. He has been considered a great master-pedagogue and a significant creative artist. Since his death a "Leó Weiner International Competition" in string quartet playing has been held annually in Budapest.
Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez bring to life beautifully performed several of his compositions, demonstrating an impressive part of his music written for violin and piano. Shaham and Erez add here a respected piece to their already amazingly performed and recorded Hungarian-originated music with Hyperion. The production is of high quality, bringing unimaginable pleasure. |
