Avetts

This cd is great. It is a bit more upbeat than some of their previous work but still true to their style.
Great songs, horrible production.

I had really been looking forward to this record since hearing they were going to be recording with Rick Rubin. Upon hearing some of the new songs live I was even more excited. Then I heard the record.

Where is the banjo? Where is Seth?

Much of the album sounds more like Scott Avett and Friends, not The Avett Brothers. Seth is reduced to a distant backup singer in many of the songs. Much of the greatness that is The Avett Brothers is Scott and Seth Avett's wonderful harmonies. For the most part, these are completely absent here.

If you want an Avett Brothers album, and you should, buy ANY of the others. Live, Vol. 2, Mignonette, Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions, Emotionalism, The Gleam, Second Gleam (Dig), they are all much better than this one.

It's The Avett Brothers' heart that has brought them where they are. But sadly, you won't find much of it here.

The unfortunate part about this album is that there isn't any criticism I can come up with for it. That, to me, is scary. Every album should have some flaws or hiccups. This one doesn't. For those out there that claim this album is missing this and that from the "old" Avett Brothers, I suggest you listen to this album again with a little more open-mindedness. A band cannot continue its career making the same album over and over again and still feel in touch with its fan base and as musicians. I see the Avett Brothers as the Hot Water Music of alt-country. Each album is somewhat different from the other, but not so much as to alienate the die-hard fans and wash out the inventiveness and creativity that make the band who they are. I think this album shows the Avetts at their best...hands down. Yes I love their other albums, particularly Four Thieves and The Second Gleam, but this album is the most complete and heartfelt to me. The album flows perfectly from beginning to end.
NEW TO AVETTS...THESE GUYS ROCK!!

Just recently discovered these talented brothers. After listening to a couple of their songs online, I immediately purchased this newest as our first album. It is sensational. We're playing it over and over at home and in the vehicles. Long-time fans complain that there's not enough banjo on this collection. That may be so, but it is still a winner, and worth more than is spent on it, because you will listen to this OVER AND OVER! Also got Emotionalism, (excellent), and The Gleam. Not getting into the Gleam so much. Mistakenly did not get The Gleam 2 which has Murder in the City...that's the one we wanted. Their occasional forays into wild rock in the middle of a ballad is different, to be sure. Somewhat off-putting at first, but you get used to it as part of their style. I find myself smiling through those parts now.
Fabulous!

Wonderful, wonderful recording by my favorite group. These guys just get better and better each time I see them. Do yourself a favor and see them live! It will make you appreciate their recordings even more.
