Appropriate album title from Ledisi Submitted on: 2009-11-10 |
|
| When I heard that Ledisi was releasing a follow-up to her 2007 album "Lost And Found", I was convinced that her next effort was going to be as mellow as the previous album. Also, not helping matters was seeing the producers involved- Chucky Thompson? Raphael Saadiq? Jam & Lewis? Orthodox & Ransum? Rex Rideout (he did the lion's share of "Lost And Found")...yeah, this was going to be real mellow. Man, was I in for a surprise!!! On her new album "Turn Me Loose", I think it's safe to say that she showed out on this one. She came in with the premise to funk. It's like she went from Anita Baker to Chaka Khan in a split second. On the first track, she presents the song "Runnin'" produced by Chief Xcel from Blackalicious- and it only gets better from there. Throughout the album, she ventures into that 70's soul sound from the South- namely Memphis soul, the Muscle Shoals sound and the Al Green era with Willie Mitchell (she's from New Orleans, after all). Orthodox & Ransum contribute two songs, including the song "Alone" that sounds a little Lalah Hathaway-ish. Other tracks like "Love Never Changes", "Please Stay" and "Knockin'" have a Sly & The Family Stone feel to them. She closes the album with an excellent cover of Jimi Hendrix & Band Of Gypsys' "Them Changes". In short, this album is a must buy. |

Question: How does a singer like Ledisi outdo herself? Submitted on: 2009-10-30 |
|
Answer: By creating an album like Turn Me Loose.
She really outdid herself on this one, ya'll. You can just feel her pushing herself outside of her comfort zone until she does in fact seem comfortable in this new territory. Change is a constant theme throughout the album and it is brilliantly woven through songs using the word 'change' in the title or in the lyrics.
So, yes, it is different from her previous albums, but this one is extremely entertaining, empowering and energizing. Ledisi has that voice and that style that makes you sit, smile and stare at your car stereo wondering how the heck she is able to do all those great vocal acrobatics she's known for. Then, of course, you're compelled to sing along (as best you can, at least, because her voice is like whoa.)
I'm the sing-along type who learns the lyrics to songs in a matter of days, and lyrically (and vocally), Ledisi really SOARS on TML. She's a fun lyricist, but she doesn't limit herself to what's written. She's a master at ad libbing and I enjoy listening to how she creatively fills the music, especially towards the end of her songs, with impromptu words, phrases, scatting, ooos and ahhhs.
Some reviewers seem to be having a hard time with Ledisi's new sound on TML, but if you keep listening, playing the album each day, I'm sure you'll find that you like where she's headed.
My favorite songs? All of them! It's a complete work of art. But if I was forced to choose, I'd choose "Everything Changes" and "I Need Love." The first captures the vibe of the whole album; the second is just a straight up banger.
So, be open-minded, give it a listen, then give it another listen. And then another listen. You'll like it. Trust me. Aight, peace. |

One of the best R&B Albums of the decade Submitted on: 2009-10-26 |

| Without a hint of exaggeration, Ledisi, although relatively new to the music scene, is one to go down in history for her brilliant interpretation of song...every track is awesome! |

Awesome from beginning to end Submitted on: 2009-10-15 |

| I loved Ledisi's first album. This album I also love. I like the way Ledisi throws in gospel without it being too gospel. What Can Be Higher Than This, I play this song over and over. I really hope people truly listen to the words of this song and the message. Ledisi's vocals are strong and beautiful. She is a true singer. Her selection of material seems to be well thought out. She doesn't go with the normal R&B. For instance the song Running has a kind of rock and roll flavor missed with soul. This album and her previous album are refreshing and creative. |
