An Advent album Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |

As a singer in a choir and an a cappella group, and a lover of music, I've always been slightly annoyed that people want to go straight to Christmas without going through Advent, and there is not enough Advent music out there. Advent is a time when it's getting progressively darker and colder. "They" put Christmas in late December because it's the time of year when, even though most of winter is yet to come, the days miraculously start getting longer again-- but that only comes after the introspection and diminishing of hope in the Advent season.
My point is that Sting has focused on that cold and dark, which is so important if you're going to appreciate the warmth and light and hope that Christmas represents. So what he's made is an Advent album. I don't listen to much pop music, but when I heard him sing The Snow It Melts the Soonest on NPR, it reminded me of the Incredible String Band and all that cool druidic/Child ballad-y stuff from my youth. That's beside my point about Advent, but I wanted to make it anyway. I bought it and I've been listening to it and enjoying it.
I gave it only four stars because I generally like either the serious, non-pop iterations of these songs, or else the totally out-there ISB. I get annoyed by the melisma that's so popular now, and that I just heard him do on Track 8 as I write this. |

mysterious winter moods Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |
|
| I have been a fan of the Police and Sting for ages. The only part of Sting's career I have avoided are his last couple solo records. Until now. This album is almost like a good movie to me instead of a collection of songs. It really does reflect the mystery, enchantment, sadness and also hope of the winter season. This not a cd for the car stereo, but rather a night time candle light or fireside cd while the cold winds blow outside. And although I have listened to the album once, I am actually saving repeated listens of this disc to do just that. This is a nice work of art. |

Very nice, indeed Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |

| Yes, I am a Sting fan. Yes, I think he can be a bit pretentious. Yes, I remember and liked The Police. This is a really nice album. It does a great job at settting a "winter mood" and as a New Englander, I know winter. It's is dreamy, a little theatrical, holiday-ish - but overall, grand. A great effort for those who enjoy lilting or sweeping background music. Enjoy! |

| Lovely music from and by Sting. I enjoyed it very much and wish I had bought the DVD which, as I saw later, was also available. |

Sting's Latest Album Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |

| I recieved Sting'S new album very quickly. Most of the songs on the CD are traditional songs from NewCastle and celtic songs from the United Kingdom. An intersting song on the cd is "Soul Cake". It is about begging for food to appease the dead as they walk the earth on Christmas. There are many songs about roses and snow. "A Cherry Tree Carol" is an intersting song that may offend christians because Jesus' earthly father Joseph is portrayed as being angry with the blessed mother and tells her to have God get her cherries from the garden because he is the father of her child. Other than that song, most of the songs are nice and relaxing songs to listen to at a house party or alone during the holidays. The CD and DVD package is $10 more and something realy true fans of sting would enjoy.Otherwise, the CD is enough for most people. |
