U2 Strikes Again: A throwback remix CD of a "Crazy" tune
Submitted on: 2009-11-02
When I first heard "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" I liked it. Alternately it wasn't my favorite song on "No Line on the Horizon". I believe that NLOTH is U2's best album in the past ten years. It has character and pushes limits that the two prior albums never seemed to reach.

I digress, "Go Crazy" is a good tune but nothing to get wild about, or so I thought. I just saw U2 last month in Tampa on their 360 Tour. The version of "Go Crazy" they perform is totally different from the album or single mix. The live rendition is a funky, disco sounding techno track that totally BLOWS AWAY the album version. Larry is actually walking around the stage playing a Congo drum!!

As for this remix CD, I think it is really great. It is almost a throwback to the "U2 of the 90s", which is a good thing.

1) Single version - This version isn't too different from the album version. Dare I say a little more poppy?

2) Fish Out of Water remix - This rendition is a bit more of a "dance" flavor and changes up the chorus a bit, it reminds me of "Information Society".

3) Dirty South Full remix - This interpretation is dark and somewhat creepy. This is probably the most interesting mix on the CD, using lyrics that are jubilant and back them by a dark wave soundtrack. This is my favorite version.

4) Redanka's "Kick the Darkness' vocal" - This adaptation really takes me back to the "Pop" album.

5) Redanka's "Sparks of Light" dub version - This revision has a very open and majestic feel to it.

6) Redanka's "Kick the Darkness' instrumental version - This alteration is basically the "Kick the Darkness" version without the vocals.

It would have been cool if a live version of this song was included on this CD. In contrast, when the song was played live bits and pieces from these remixes can be heard. For instance, Dirty South Full remix can be heard towards the end of the live version. I hope that future U2 singles have as much punch as this CD single does.
Catchy Hit, Great Mixes

30 years on, U2 are still "squeezing sparks of light" from their extraordinary career. Has any band ever sounded this vital this late in the game? None that I can think of. NO LINE is, simply enough, U2's best record since '91's ACHTUNG BABY, and here is its most promising single.

"I'll Go Crazy" is one of the catchiest uptempo singles U2 have ever released. Those who were lucky enough to catch the band on the U2360 stadium tour know that "Crazy" was radically retooled into a crowd-pleasing techno-stomper, and the mixes on this single give you a taste of how well this song lends itself to being remixed.

But, regarding the song itself: Bono's muli-faceted lyrics blend humor with wisdom, passion with pathos, drama with whimsy. "Crazy" is about stepping outside your safety zone and experiencing life to the fullest.

The music is vintage Edge, and also multifaceted, with his trademarked resounding melodies, jangling rhythms, and crunching riff-action. The track is topped off with lush synth-work, smooth production, and driving drums and bass from Larry and Adam. The overall sound quality on all three tracks is superb.

If you like U2, and you like remix singles, this is one of their best of the decade.
This could be U2's worst song

And there are several reasons why:

1) The overcompression is rampant in the mixing resulting in horrible distortion at several points.

2) The pseudo falsetto notes Bono attempts to hit at two different points in the song ("she says I'll go crazy if I dont go CRAZY TONIGHT" and "the sweetest melody is the one we HAVENT HEARD") sound awful. If you cant hit the notes, dont try.

3) The lyrics meander from riots to crying to spitting to sweet tooths to dating idiots. Does Bono have one of those balls filled with water containing a polyhedron where each side has a Bono-ism, he shakes it up, and whichever side comes up is the line he uses? He used to write some gut wrenching and passionate lyrics. Not here. These lyrics are pointless and embarrassing.

4) The guitar riffs are so typical, it sounds manufactured. Those chiming guitars used to make my hair stand on end, but they've become a bit old. In the late 90's, Edge was getting sounds out of his amp that sounded very atypical for u2. Lately he seems content to play it way too safe.

Many thought Get On Your Boots was the worst single from No Line. I have to disagree. This one is even worse. And look, you get two pointless remixes instead of a b-side. How cute. U2 used to give us some great b-sides. I guess the creative well is starting to dry up. I did say I'll Go Crazy could be U2's worst song, but No Line has several tracks giving it some competition.
U2's best this decade!!!!

I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight. This song is easily the best on the new album -which is also great-if not the best of U2's decade. The song is from the blackberry commercial and the animated music video. It's lyrics, melody, and beat are superb. This discs contains several remixes and the single version, it does not include the blackberry version, but the single/album version is very similar to that. This is a must have for a U2 fan, or a great song to start with for new U2 fans. GREAT SONG!
