| I was at the taping of this show in Chicago and Bill was hilarious. He's great to see in person and this show brings back the great memory of his very funny performance that night. |

DOCTORED AUDIENCE REACTIONS Submitted on: 2009-11-16 |

I've been a big fan of Bill for several years now, and I sincerely admire him as a performer, comedian, and storyteller. However, this album falls very flat for me. He's no longer taking the clever and interesting directions with his ideas that he always had. His children have grown up and moved out of his house, and I believe they mistakenly took a box which contained his comedy.
NOW... The reason I gave this album one star, is because I couldn't give it zero stars. I would have given it two stars on principle, but there is something in it that I cannot get past, which purely disgusts and infuriates me - Something I was certainly not looking for, and would not have even thought to. I played this album in headphones on first listen- Therefore, both Bill and the audience were crystal clear. In the first track, I heard several instances of fake audience responses. Aside from the "wash" of the natural crowd, I could hear some individual voices, which sound to me like they were recorded separately (possibly in a studio), up-close, and later mixed in with the sound of the natural crowd. Worst of all; You know how you can just tell when someone is acting, especially when faking or forcing a laugh? Or, when someone is deliberately exaggerating a generic response, such as "Huh?" - The ones on this album are not even acted well. In the first track, as Bill is describing something that calls for a "What?" or "Huh?" response, you can hear three distinct, close "Huh"'s in the right side, which are clearly deliberate and planted to elevate the supposed effect to the listener. This continues throughout the album, in various forms; sometimes individuals, sometimes more crowd-ish. It is most prevalent in the start of the show, then fluctuates in level and/or frequency from then on. Even if these people were actually in the audience, and were just close to the mics, it's most likely that that they were chosen (or hired) before-hand, intentionally placed near the mics, and encouraged to "enhance" their reactions. Either way, there's no question that this album has had significant help.
As I said, I would have never even thought to look for this, especially in a comedy album - but this jumped out at me. If you haven't noticed this yourself, listen closely, and you'll find that at the very least, my suspicion is legitimate. You've deeply disappointed me, Bill - If Richard Pryor had no need to pad his horribly awkward audience for his "Here And Now" show, then you've done a horrible disservice to the wonderful world of comedy by padding this show - especially by having it done so obviously and badly. The only positive thing I can say about this album is that I got it used for $3. |

Bill Engvall is a funny guy Submitted on: 2009-10-18 |

It's very simple. If you like Bill Engvall's past albums you will Like this album. If you don't, you won't.
If you've never heard his routine then....He's a funny guy and his style of humor won't embarrass you if your saintly grandmother walks in while you're listening to him. I will say that the DVD version is probably better and I will be ordering it when it comes available. There are one or two places in his routine where the audience is laughing at what he is doing, facial expressions etc, rather than what he is saying so, as is true for most comedians, to get the full benefit of his show you really need to be able to see it. |

Not a grand slam but still a homerun. Submitted on: 2009-10-07 |

Okay, is this Bill's best? I'm not sure. I think I'd have to say "no", BUT, it's still worth getting, in my opinion. I got a lot of laughs out of it and I know I'll be listening to it for years.
Maybe I'm just a little too close to Bill's age, know what I mean? A lot of this material makes me think, "Yeah, pal, I'm right there with ya." OR "Hmmm, that's gonna be me......ah....real soon." There's no, "Here's Your Sign" material and THAT'S OKAY. (Move along people, move along.)
Yes, I WILL be getting the DVD when it comes out (Nov. 24 according to Amazon). Another highly enjoyable project Bill. Keep 'em comin'.
This will NOT be enjoyed by those who need profanity every three words or by those who need to hear how much our country sucks or how their parents didn't love them and all that standard nonsense most comedians come out with. Bill won't let you down. |
