TERRIBLE; a return to '90s Metallica Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |
|
Don't believe the hype. This album sucks. It's like trying to listen to Bob Rock-era Metallica, only without any memorable riffs or lyrics. (Hey wait, that's EXACTLY like '90s Metallica!)
Although their first album was clearly influenced by Slayer, this 2nd effort seems to have forgotten all that. Vocals are slow and sort of chanted, riffs mostly consist of chunk-riding on the E string, and there is nothing at all notable about the drums. It's a boring craptacular journey, and with all but one song clocking in at well over 5 minutes, it's tedious as well.
I had high hopes for Evile; Enter The Grave was one of my favorite albums of 2007. This album barely made one listen in my CD player, and will likely never get played again. There's no fury, no anger, no THRASH at all here, other than the aforementioned E string riding. I know these guys can do better, but they blew it with this album.
I'd have given it less stars, but apparently one star is as few as the system is prepared to allow.
Spend your money on Slayer's new album, or Exodus, or Testament or Municipal Waste. Don't waste it on this tripe. |

Progressive "Justice"-era Metallica meets Max Cavalera-esk vox Submitted on: 2009-11-07 |

Take the progressive approach Metallica took on the "Justice" album and bring in Max Cavalera (Sepultura) for vocals and you have the new band EVILE. Of course, that's a metaphor, but basically that's it. You have rather long songs, 5-8 minutes and one topping off at just over 11 minutes. Very similar to the Justice album indeed. Of course, there is some irony here, as this band started out as a Metallica cover band. So go figure. The difference is in the vocal department. Th rhythm guitarist who is also the singer belts out the lyrics in a rather mono-tone way very similar to Tom Araya and Max Cavalera. And then you got the cover art here. Which reminds one of Sepultura's classic "Arise". The little sticker on the shrink wrap even says "for fans of Slayer, Megadeth, and Sepultura". And I can see that...especially the Slayer and Sepultura reference, but not so much Megadeth. Megadeth is much more "melodic speed metal" than true thrash. But anyway, if you like Slayer, Sepultura, and "Justice"-era Metallica, EVILE is a band for you.
So how is the music? Not too bad, really. A bit repetative though. But what thrash band's music isn't to some extent? That's kind of why I got away from thrash in my metal comeback in this decade. But with all the new thrash bands coming out over the last few years, my taste for thrash has been rewet.
Well, actually, as I continue listening to this album as I write this review, this band is closer to old school Sepultura before they went all native on us than anything else. Doesn't have as many ripping solos as say Seputura has, but the ones it does have are very Sepultura-like. |

Evile is awesome Submitted on: 2009-10-06 |

These guys are a great thrash metal band - takes me back to early 1983. Bt these guys are from 2003- and now!
They have taken the thrash sound that Metallica,Megadeth and Exodus created and added to it.
Flemming Rasmussen the metallica producer has produced these guys. So you know it rocks.
Also, my prayers go out to their bassist Mike Andersen who passed away today at the age of 32.
These guys deserve muich better fate. |
