"The Hills Are Running Red" : Blackie Burns Us Alive Submitted on: 2009-11-14 |
|
No one can carry off a cd with sheer attitude like Blackie. All Lawless has to do is show up. I'm not going to say this is one of his greatest cds, but this starts and finishes with a lot of b@ll$. This isn't the apocalyptic, burned earth, scorching humanity cd that Blackie promised, but it's darn close; and it's closer than a lot of other bands have gotten lately. It opens with three songs that are all rockers to remember. "Crazy" begs to be performed live. Mike Dupke frakking kills the skins on this one; this is a drummer's dream; just pound em till the stands break. (And I might as well go ahead and say it. If there was a highlight on this whole cd for me, it was Dupke the whole d@mn time killing the drums and Blair absolutely laying a wall of fire down when he finally gets to cut loose. Blair doesn't do so the whole cd long, but when he does, it's so volatile that it's just inspiring.) The next one, "Live To Die Another Die" sounds like a follow up to "Dying For The World," and that's not a bad thing. It's got the same theme (living to kill to die some other time), the same vibe, and a rousing chorus that's blood boilingly good. "Babylon's Burning" is a dark toned rocker that could have just as easily been the opener. Doug Blair burns up his guitar on this one. "Burn" (the Deep Purple tune, of course) is a cover that W.A.S.P. had originally intended for a bonus version of the Dominator cd, but it never saw the light of day for some reason (even though it was listed, bizarrely, on track listings on many retailer's sites - including Amazon's - ) is alright; it admittedly fits the Revelation / Apocalypse idea of the whole cd (a woman who's the "devil's sperm" and sets cities aflame and all), but I guess I've heard this so many times from DP and Coverdale (Whitesnake) that it just didn't add anything all that new. It was interesting to hear how Blackie tackles some of the vocals (he stretches out the word "burn" in the chorus as long as it'll go without any change in pitch), but that's about it. For the W.A.S.P. Nation, "Into the Fire" might sound a little like something you've heard before (I won't say what so I don't ruin the song for someone new to Blackie & Boys), but it's still a strong, strong tune. Blackie's got a wail that moves into a tortured growl that's just to die for, so play on. I actually have found myself listening to this again and again, actually. "Thunder Red" actually starts off with a borrowed riff from "Burn" and quickly moves into a fast-paced rocker that's a blitzkrieg that you'll either like or not. It hits hard and moves right on into "Seas of Fire," a song that opens with a theatrical build-up, and I got to say that I really like this one. Blackie's said repeatedly that he's best when he's on a b!tc# trip, and he hits it on this one. It's about "waking up" in chaos and "making up the bed" that you've been making for yourself all along. If you don't like the "seas of fire" that you've created, well, oh, well, oh, h&ll, say hello to them anyway. You'll be there awhile. Awesome stuff. This is another six-string sizzler for Blair. "Godless Run" is an introspective song like we've heard on the Neon God cd and the Jonathon saga. Pretty good stuff, though, because Blair skillfully puts a lot of hardcore fills into a near ballad. I don't know how, but even when I think "Man, Blackie, that sounds just like that song on . . .," well, I find myself getting absolutely caught up in it anyway. Now, if you need more proof that the end is right go&&@mn knocking on your door, here it is: Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. covering a Chuck Berry tune! But, folks, he absolutely rips it apart. You've got to hear this one to believe. Trust me or not, it's an @$$-kicker. People are saying this is not a great cd. I disagree. Put it chest to chest with anything you've listened to me lately, and tell me it doesn't stand up. You'd be wrong. Blackie's still the blackest mother&%*^er on the planet, folks.

| one of this best WASP releases.the only problem with this(and all recent WASP releases) is that it's only 9 songs. 2 more rockers would have been welcome. |

Not great and not terrible.
Blackie is long past his prime and it shows.
Songs are decent.
Nothing to write home about.
Better than nothing but it could have been much better. |

Another solid outing from Blackie and the boys Submitted on: 2009-10-29 |

| While this album may not be ground breaking, it is however a solid showing. Blackie plays to his strengths and weaves haunting melodies and full on rock extravaganzas, while his voice sounds in top form. While i'm not a huge fan of remakes, i sill think wasp's paint it black is one of the best, i find myself loving "promised land". a fast full on explosion of rock and roll at its best. If youre a wasp fan you wont be disappointed, if youre not one give it a try. |

AWESOME ALBUM Submitted on: 2009-10-27 |

Every song sounds superb beginning with the song Crazy. If you like the dominator last command and headless children albums you will like this album very much. The guitars and vocals are flawless, probably the best wasp album in years.
Crazy has great lyrics and guitars its easy to play this song alot.
Live To Die Another Day has great lyrics giving you truth in it. The moral of it is to be grateful for every day you have so make the most of everyday, cause you never know if its your last.
Babylon's Burning is a song about rapture and destruction another awesome song with good guitar riffs.
Burn awesome remake of the Deep Purple hit with good guitars except theres no keyboard and sytheisizers in it.
Into The Fire is ok only because its a slow track
Thunder Red great guitar riffs and lyrics very fast and exciting
Seas of Fire very fun and the lyrics are dark and well written and the guitars riffs are good and fast
Godless Run is a slow song but very haunting which makes it awesome to listen to
Promised Land is a remake but 100x better the original because it fast and the way blackie sings this awesome you can understand easily which makes this a great closer. This song could easily be a single. |
