Kinda monotonous Submitted on: 2009-11-21 |

| This CD has some good songs but they all start sounding the same after a short while, it sounds a bit monotonous and repeat playability is not very good. |

Red Headed Step Child Submitted on: 2009-11-21 |

| Freshly on the scene, La Roux's 80's flashback sound is addictingly catchy and fun. Possibly the red headed step child of Depeche Mode's cheekiness and Eurythmics androgyny, La Roux is an awesome addition to the 'retro' scene. |

Joyful, great party album, but there is more to it Submitted on: 2009-11-15 |

The first thing that comes to mind when one looks at the album cover is the resemblance between Elly Jackson's androgynous looks and early Eurythmics Annie Lennox, but beyond the superficial comparisons and the extense family tree attributed to the duo composed by Jackson and Ben Langmaid, La Roux is a tiny box of surprises.
There is no denying that the army of singles released before the record created a huge anticipation and even generated rumors of possibilities of failure, but they successfully sail through all that and deliver a cheerful debut record that is, well, irresistible. La Roux works well both as a collection of smashing singles and as a musical body.
The fact that the recording coincided with the end of her relationship might explain the overall tone of the album, but also gives an opportunity to explore lyrics and composition past the monotone / minimalistic synthesizer arrangements. When the book opens up one can savor melancholy (Fascination), deception (Growing pains) and hope (Bulletproof). This puts to rest the worries about contrived musical range and explains in part the popularity of the duo. It does not hurt either that they, along with a horde of emerging artists, cite as their direct influence the electro-pop acts of the 80's that we all so dearly love; but the trick is to stand out and is precisely where the issue may reside.
Ironically, for a record that screams from its four corners the desire to be taken seriously it finds its most inspired moments in the slow tracks. Cover my eyes and Tigerlily give a glimpse of what she can do without forcing that falsetto on us. The power of simplicity!
In the end it is hard to decide which direction La Roux would need to take to become a lasting impression. The choruses are contagious and the record is a singalong sensation sure to be reminded in every party for the rest of the year, but what about after? They are experiencing the moment and just like that they are entitled to enjoy being a pseudo spin-off from everything eighties. They prove they are good at following pressed paths but also effective at paving their own ground, even if shyly. "I'm going in for the kill, I'm doing it for the thrill" summons it all, and we are keeping our ears wide open for more. |

True Artistry Submitted on: 2009-11-06 |

| I love every track on this album! It is sexy, mysterious, funky, and unique and I can feel the music in my soul. Elly is going to be par with Annie Lennox in my opinion; she is a true artist. La Roux is original and fun and every song is sharp and thoughtfully written. I love the 80's techno vibe and how it is turned into something of the future. |
