Spend more time making music and less time tweeting and messing with ditzy b-list blondes, John Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

It appears Continuum remains John Mayer's pinnacle achievement on all accounts, and compared to this disappointing effort, Continuum is a masterpiece - an overused term (like "genius") I try to avoid as long as possible.
To put it bluntly, in my opinion `Battle Studies' fails to deliver BIG time. There's simply NOTHING here that hasn't been heard a thousand times in similar country & blues tinged white pop music - not melodically, not harmonically and certainly not thematically (despite Mayer's hopes with ostentatious titles such as "War Of My Life").
If this was a demo of an unknown recording artist hopeful, or even the debut cd of someone else, it wouldn't have the impact that it (most likely) will just because it's by an established young artist like Mayer.
The 11+ songs seem to be either variations of each other, or Mayer's previous songs. There's the Claptonesque throwaway jam ("Crossroads"), there's not one but two songs that sound suspiciously similar to "Heart Of Life" and "Stop This Train".
In interviews, he also seems to have a major "I'm a songwriting god that only comes once in a century" complex, without even a hint of self irony. Well, based on this effort, someone should deliver him the bad news. |

Always shows talent!!!! Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

| Once again Mayer hits all octaves in a bluesy, jazzy, poppy kind of way! His unique voice and sophisticated guitar riffs with the nice drum beats make this CD another great piece to add to you collection. If you are a true Mayer fan, it is a no brainer. His music keeps you upbeat and happy. The lyrics can be a bit simplistic at times, yet at others deeper meanings can be found. While I like the reflection on "Crossroads" it just cannot seem to capture the essence of the original. Bottom line... you will not be disappointed in this new release. It is worth the add to your collection of music and will certainly be one you can pull out again and again! |

Lack of artistic vision... same old tricks. Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

I am not anti-mainstream music. I actually liked Continuum a lot... but this album is so full of the pop formula that it is boring to me.
On "Do You Know Me," his nylon-string guitar is clearly out of tune. Come on John, you're a professional!
Taylor Swift sings what, TWO lines?!
What happened to the bold John venturing out into blue trio territory? Pino Paladino and Steve Jordan pushing him to his musical limits? No longer. It feels like he has regressed into what was comfortable, safe, and conservative.
Has he grown as a musician since Continuum? Sure, it shows in his technique, his note choices, his lick phrasings. Does it show in his songwriting? In my opinion, not one bit. |

Talent To Burn Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

| John Mayer has produced a fantastic CD of strong songs. He's one of the best pop songwriters we have right now. Listen close. Mood and sonic colors will take you on a wonderful journey, if you choose to let them. And you know what? He can make it come alive on stage. As a musician for many years it's so refreshing to see a performer who can really play. And man can this guy sing. Very soulful as in an old soul. Thanks Mr. Mayer |

John Mayer may not be the worst but his battle with studies has been a big problem for him Submitted on: 2009-11-22 |

| I admire the fact that John has pursued his education at the same time as his music career, and that his difficulty with his studies has encouraged him to be creative and make an album like "battle studies" but if you think about it it is only leading to more procrastination. John needs to decide if he wants to complete is marine biology career OR continue with his musical career and not try to do both at the same time. I heard that the only reason he didn't pass his final exams was because he was unable to discern the difference between a porpoise and a mammal when it comes to ocean life. John, whales are MAMMALS buddy MAMMALS! John needs to relax, put down the guitar for a minute, and concentrate on his studies. We need more people protecting marine life not singing about how hard it is to study it!! I get that its hard, and that whales are very big. I just think John is spreading himself too thin. John Mayer once saved a seal from chocking by doing the heimlich maneuver! You go John! |
