Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Very Complex, Entertaining CD. Very Unique

Have to preface this by stating I am a huge Foo Fighters Fan, I am not a fan of Nirvana or Queens of the Stone Age (really know very little about them), and was a huge Zep fan back in the 80's but rarely listen to them much anymore. So of course I had some preconceived notions of how Them Crooked Vultures might sound and I was excited to pick up this CD.

It is a pretty spectacular sound. It is great to hear Dave back on the drums and John Paul Jones - I really never knew how good of a bass player he was. Musically this CD is rock solid. The mix of these 3 musicians together have created a unique sound and bring something new to today's "rock" sound.

I had thought of downloading just the Mp3's for this, but after watching some of the live clips on youtube from their shows and seeing some of the prmos they put out, I decided to buy the CD to get the CD booklet. I am glad I did. Turns out Josh is quite the creative lyricist - at least I am assuming he wrote all the lyrics. The CD booklet with lyrics is important, because my one gripe about the CD is half the lyrics are so difficult to hear clearly that I would otehrwise have no idea what they were singing about.

My one weak point in making this a 5 star rating is the vocals. I never made an attempt to get into QOTSA because I really don't like J Hommes's vocals. I find them bearable on this CD, but it is really his lyrics that stand out for me. Of course, I am not sure anyone elses vocals could fit in here with the type of music they are making. I also checked out a few interviews with J Homme on youtube and the guy is obviously bright and smart.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of rock and roll creativity and musicianship. These guys just really rock together. I've listened to this CD about 6-7 times now and find something new and different to like on each listen. I am sure I will not get bored of it - which is more then I can say for most music today. But also understand it is a bit of a more experimental sound where the songs have vert little structure. If you are looking for and short opening riff, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, finish - look elsewhere. This CD is a bit of a ride.

It reminds me a bit of U2's Achtung Baby, not in the sound, but in the experimental sound of the music and the message(s) in the lyrics. At the time, Actung Baby was very ground breaking and it took me a good 20-30 listens to really "get it". Who knows, maybe I'll check out some
OMG!! GET THIS CD

This is psychedelic rock mixed with pure rock, mixed with blues, mixed with ... well, if you are a fan of these guys, you'll hear the influences.

Ok. I loved Kyuss, I love QOTSA, I love EODM, and now I love TCV (Them Crooked Vultures)! And MUST not forget Zep and Foo Fighters, as if ANYBODY COULD!?

OMG!!! When and how does Josh (Homme) come up with the time to dedicate himself and his craft(s) (which are guitars & vocals, and perhaps even song writing) to all of these projects that include, recording, touring and his family life!!??? It's a mystery to me, but he NEVER ceases to astound me. HE IS AN ABSOLUTE ROCK GOD and, well, should I even say A ROCK 'N' ROLL WIZARD!!!??? He is AWESOME!!!

Ok, enough about Josh. LOVE THIS CD! It's a mix of the Late, GREAT Cream (Scumbag Blues) and ZEP and others. With thanks to Josh (OMG), John Paul Jones(another ROCK GOD who would FOREVER be in my L-O-V-E group ) and let's not forget DAVE (Foo-Fighters with my fav song "My Hero" which really stuck with me after 911 and well everthing after)-it's ROCK LOVE, this is a MUST CD for any pre/post QOTSA fan, Zep fan and everywhere in between.

Trust me, you will NOT regret getting this one.

OK. GUYS, you MUST come to Houston,TX soon. I WILL BE THERE. :-)
One of my favourite albums of 2009

Seeing as I'm a fan of Zeppelin, Queens of The Stone Age, and Foo Fighters, the idea of buying this cd was a no brainer to me.
Upon inital listen the impression I was left with was it sounds like another QOTSA album.... And only found a few songs that stood out. However upon inital listens to the album it is anything but another QOTSA album. I think its funny how people can judge an album so quickly and most reviewers do that. I like to give an album a few listens (roughly 20-40) before I can determine if it is eligable to become a regular in the cd player. And this album quickly has turned into just that for me.
Before I purchased this cd I did however look at the reviews and some of them included that there was a Zeppelin like presence on the album. At first like I said it sounded like another QOSTA album and I could'nt figure out where the Zeppelin was. THIS IS AN ALBUM YOU CANNOT LISTEN TO A FEW SONGS AT A TIME. LISTEN TO IT IN BULK THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH. And you certainly cannot judge it on a couple listens. There is so many different elements in each song on this album. Songs that I initially did'nt like at first now have become some of my favs. "Elephants" and "Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up"
Right then onto the breakdown of the album ...........

1. NO ONE LOVES ME & NEITHER DO I .......... good opener def. better material on the album than this although midway through the song their is a great tempo change which makes it a great song.
2. MIND EARSER, NO CHASER .......... Def sounds like its a radio song but in a good way. This was a fav of mine right off the bat, very catchy chorus.
3. NEW FANG .............. choppy fast rythm and good vocals grea,t closing solo to the song
4. DEAD END FRIENDS........ love this distorted sound, it has a spooky erie sound to it, the vocals are great again, this is a great song to just drive and blast in the car and the midway through the song is great " doo do do do do do do do do do dooo" love the solo to close out the song
5. ELEPHANTS ............. upon intial listen I did not care for this song, now it is one of my fav. It starts with a repetitive riff that just keeps getting faster and faster then breaks off and the distortion makes it sound like an actual elephant, its just very clever and a great song structure.
6. SCUMBAG BLUES .......... love the guitar work in this song the riffs are very catchy and sometimes are stuck in my head.
7. BANDOLIERS........... talking about getting riffs stuck in my head this song has a very repetitive riff but it has a great sound to it and the vocals go very well with the guitar work.
8. REPTILES....... well if theres any song on the album that you can easily see some Zeppelin in its this song. The vocals are def different in this song and the riffs are just flat out insane, the chorus guitar work is almost "dream like" This is def. a stand out song on the album In My Opinion.
9. INTERLUDE WITH LUDES....... this sounds like something you would get off the begining of "Lullabies to Paralayize" its an intresting song but kind of bland, I usually skip this one, and its the only one that I skip. But its still a good song just more of an extended interlude to the next song.
10. WARSAW OR THE FIRST BREATH YOU TAKE AFTER YOU GIVE UP............ yes the title is that long. The song is very slow paced but a lot happens in this song. Towards the middle of the song you get a very nice solo. Then the vocals become echoing and distorted which makes an almost psychedelic sound which is to die for, all along this little riff playing which makes this song truley a masterpiece yes I said that. Not too many people can tolerate this song or see the great variations it has.
11. CALIGULOVE......... one of my fav. songs And a real stand out IMO John Paul Jones keyboards come into play in this song and they sound amazing. I just love the chorus to this song to its truley a stand out song. Towards the end of the song you get an almost "desert psychedelic sound"
12. GUNMAN .......... I regretably admit to likeing this song, why regretably because it sounds almost like a club-esc-disco song. Its got a very groovy up beat tempo to it almost disco-techno ish then the chorus gets some keyboard work and erie sound that makes it great for me.
13. SPINNING IN DAFFODILS .......... the vocals on this song are amazing another one of my favs. The song ends with a unique twist.

STAND-OUT SONGS
CALIGULOVE
DEAD END FRIENDS
REPTILES
WARSAW.......

DUDS
NONE !!!

If you want a cd that doesnt sound like anything else and a truley original album get this now.

Cheers !!!

When I first heard John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) would be making an album together, I was instantly intrigued. How could it possibly be bad with a lineup like that? The answer: it can't.

Homme and Grohl have teamed up before on Queens of the Stone Age's album Songs For the Deaf with phenomenal results and while Them Crooked Vultures sound much closer to that project than anything Led Zeppelin ever released, the John Paul Jones influence is unmistakable. Listen to the first track "No One Loves Me & Neither Do I" and you might find yourself wondering when the Led Zeppelin hammer will fall. Then, suddenly, at two minutes and forty four seconds in, the tempo changes, the mood aggressively shifts and Them Crooked Vultures announce their arrival to the world.

For fans of Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl's vocals may seem shockingly absent with the exception of the occasional chorus, but when his voice is heard, the contrast with Homme's voice is fitting. Super groups such as this often suffer from a conflict of interests where each member craves the spotlight, but instead of butting heads and falling apart at the seams, their differences are embraced and a brilliant formula emerges. No, Them Crooked Vultures is not better than Led Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, or Foo Fighters, but to hear the results of two of Led Zeppelin's most successful followers teaming up with an original member is still thrilling.

Considering Homme and Grohl are both currently in exceptionally popular bands, it is unlikely this project will extend past a single album. All three members have clearly earned their high ranks in rock and roll history and instead of approaching this album looking to change the world, Them Crooked Vultures erred on the side of honesty. At its core, Them Crooked Vultures is just three of the most brilliant minds in rock playing music together. They clearly enjoyed making the album and fans of any of their original bands will undoubtedly enjoy listening to it.

Loving this recording, very original, dark but energetic. Stand out tracks IMO are No One Loves Me, Spinning in Daffodils, Reptiles and Elephants but it is pretty stacked top to bottom.
