Q. To set the tone for the readers, how would you describe your sound?
The synopsis of my youth…and a dozen freshly baked cupcakes.
Q. So you are about to release a new album, tell us everything about it starting with the name of the album.
Well, I decided to call it “Kites (Up, Up and Away!)” not only because it just sounded cute, but one of the tracks on the album is called “Kites” and it is, without a doubt, the most moving and profound song on the album. (Also the longest.) It’s a relatively short album in terms of quantity of songs (7, I believe, though that’s not final…yet.) though it still runs about 45 minutes. It’s mostly a collection of songs about my childhood and father, who passed away last year. It’s got some pretty awesome stuff and I’m super excited for everyone to hear it!
Q. Who else was involved in helping you bring this album to fruition?
Everyone who has ever believed in me, first and foremost, and then my friend Maddie’s father, who has his own little in-home studio and let me record for free. (Which was totally awesome, because I’m broke.) So thanks a bunch Mr. Brady!
Q. What would you say some of the challenges you encountered in doing this album were?
Finding a place to record. I was and still am on relatively no budget (out of a job, don’t ya know.) so finding a studio that was cheap was a big hassle. When finally I thought I was going to be recording with this guy Nick Stetina, a friend just told me that she has a studio in her house I could use for free. So that was pretty awesome.
Q. Can you give us some insight into where, what or who motivated you to do the album?
Friends, family, fans, and fathers (All those wonderful ‘f’ words.)
Q. What would you say is the best single and why do you think it is?
I’m not sure any of them are single worthy, to be quite honest. I think the public and the music business professionals have a much different view of a single than I do. I didn’t write anything on the album specifically to be a single, I just wrote about the things that mean a lot to me. It’s just my art, whether people think it’s catchy enough, or good enough to be a single is up to them.
Q. Are you planning to produce videos for any of the songs on this album?
Maybe. I have a few ideas, but I don’t want to give away any surprises.
Q. Are you planning to tour to promote this album? If so, when and where will you be performing?
Not right away. I’m playing a show at a coffeehouse the night of the release and then I’m taking a break until summer. I have too many other things to focus on right now, and I couldn’t play well if I was all stressed out about a million other things. I think I want to do a Midwest tour over the summer, (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, etc etc) but finding coffeehouses that have live music is more of a hassle than you would imagine. So many places don’t have websites, and it would be extremely impractical to drive all the way to Ohio to find new venues. So we’ll see how that goes.
Q. So how do you see this album propelling your career in the music industry?
Well, it will be my first full length release, so that has to count for something.
Q. And we can’t forget to ask, of course, when and where can fans buy this album?
Come see me live! I’ll be selling them at all of my future gigs, and I’ll be placing a link to buy it on my MySpace. (www.myspace.com/chericecosentino)
Q. One last question for you: What other great things or projects can we look forward to hearing about from you in the future?
Oh, I don’t know yet. We’ll see.
We would like to thank you for talking with us and we wish you all the best!
