Christopher Robson was born in Falkirk Scotland and is widely regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the Counter-tenor voice, with a repetoire ranging from Medieval monody to the Avante-garde. Since his debut with the English National Opera in 1981 he has made a particular impact in the field of Opera and is highly respected for the energy and commitment of his performances. Over a period of years he won critical acclaim for the many roles he played at the ENO, including several Handel operas and the UK premieres of Reimann's "Lear" and Philip Glass's "Akhnaten". brbr
He has also sung with The Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne Festival and Opera Factory in the UK, in America with Chicago Lyric, Houston Grand, New York City and Sao Paulo opera companies, as well as many other major European companies. He has worked with many of the world's leading conductors and orchestras, among them Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mark Elder, Gustav Leonhardt, Sir Charles Mackerras, Gary Bertini, Zubin Mehta and Ivor Bolton.brbrSince 1994 he has been a regular guest with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, taking part in productions of Handel's "Giulio Cesare", "Xerxes" & "Ariodante", as well as playing Orlofsky in Strauss's "Die Fledermaus". brbrIn 1997 he was awarded the Opernfestspiel Preis in recognition of his contribution to Opera & Culture in Munich. He has appeared in festivals all over the world and recorded extensively for radio and television. Recorded discs include Vivaldi's "Nisi Dominus" and "Gloria", Bach's "Magnificat", Handel's "Messiah", "Ariodante", "Xerxes" and "Belshazzar", John Casken's "Golem", Tippett's "The Ice Break" and Maxwell-Davies's "Resurrection". World premieres have included the creation of the Angel in John Tavener's "Apocalypse", Claire in John Lunn's "The Maids" (an adaptation of Genet's play written especially for Christopher and his brother, the tenor Nigel Robson), Ometh in John Casken's "Golem", and the refugee in Jonathan Dove's "Flight". In 2000 he premiered newly commissioned recital works by Hans Ulrich Lehmann and Hans Jurgen von Bose, as well as chamber works by John Tavener and Xavier Dayer. Recent years have seen further appearances in Barcelona, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, and his continued association with the Bavarian State Opera in new productions of Handel's "Rodelinda", Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress" and a series of recitals with Petra Ronner. In 2002 he performed for the Bayerische Staatsoper a newly commissioned "one-man" opera based on Franz Kafka's "Metamorphoses" (composer Hans Jurgen von Bose) at the Munich Opera Festival. That year he was again awarded the Opernfestspiel Preis, the only person to have recieved the prize twice, and in 2003 he was granted the honoured title "Bayerische Kammersaenger" by the State of Bavaria.
