Interview with Chris Vaughn

Q. At what age did you realize you wanted to become a music artist and why?

ANSWER HERE: It's hard to say, because I've wanted to play music as far back as I can remember. I guess if I had to pick an age it would be about nine or ten years old. That was the first time I got up the nerve to sing at church, even though I had to sit at the piano with my back turned to the congregation because I had a bad case of stage fright. Why? I guess because when I got finished with the song the response was overwhelming and I liked it. So stage fright had to take a back seat.

Q. Most music artists have that special someone or thing that influenced their decision to do music. Did anyone or something in your life play a major role in influencing you to go into the music business?

ANSWER HERE: It's hard to answer because there are so many people and things that influenced me. At an early age it was the Louvin Brothers, Merle Haggard, George Jones etc. as well as my dad who influenced my writing, but later in my life so many people encouraged me to do this thing that I already loved to do. These same people, friends, fans, and family still influence me today. And now just like then my mom is behind me one hundred percent.

Q. In terms of the music, which major artist(s) influenced your style and why?

ANSWER HERE Joe Diffie because I think he is the very best at what he does. And having met him, I know that I'm struggling for what he has accomplished. He is in my opinion one of the best singers I've ever heard and he is still down to earth. Willie Nelson because he is his own man and he has fans for life. George Jones took me to school on how to sing. Johnny Paycheck because he lived every song he sang.

Q. With so many independent artists trying to make it, what makes you stand out from the competition?

ANSWER HERE: Experience.

Q. Music industry professionals are quick to say that being an artist means to gracefully fit a marketable niche in the industry. If you were offered an opportunity that asked you to be something you are not, would you do it to get your foot in the door?

ANSWER HERE Well... what does it pay??? I feel like I already had my foot in the door. I've worked with major artists and songwriters but I'm only willing to compromise so much. Not my morals or my integrity.

Q. Making music is one thing, selling it is another. What types of strategies do you use in promoting your artistic work and getting it heard by the proper professionals?

ANSWER HERE I have thirty web sites promoting my album. My strategy is just hard work whick is something I'm accustomed to.

Q. In regards to wheeling and dealing, how important do you feel business knowledge is to making it in an industry filled with much heartache?

ANSWER HERE It is a must. In my opinion it is a good idea to know a good lawyer that knows the music business. Coming from a twenty year veteran in the business, you have to have a good working knowledge of the business side.

Q. Let's fast forward to 5 years from now. What advice would you offer to struggling independent artists?

ANSWER HERE I don't know where I'll be in five years so that would be hard to answer. My advice to one now would be to stay independant. I've seen a side of the music business that I would never be willing to conform to and with the internet it gives us independant artists a new medium to present our music to the world as ourselves.

Q. Most successful artists are involved in charitable organizations that stand for a cause that hits close to home. In that regard, once you reach success, what charitable cause(s) would you like to be involved in and why?

ANSWER HERE I would like to be involved with my own charitable causes, meaning, if I saw a family in chrisis over sickness, the father being a war vet or what ever reason and be able to pay their mortgage payment or give them cash to buy groceries etc. I would like to be involved in dedicating my time and talent to fundraisers that help local charities. I want to help individuals that I see every day that I know could use some help.

Well, we thank you for taking the time to interview with us and certainly wish you the best in your music career endeavors. There you have it ladies and gentlemen, an inside look into the mind of an independent artist struggling to bring their hard work to fruition in an industry where perseverance and thick skin means survival. No one said it would be easy.
