Dexter Mills, Jr. soon developed the stage name Consequence at the age of nineteen, he made his first official appearance on A Tribe Called Quest 's 1996 album Beats, Rhymes, and Life . Consequence soon earned a deal at Elektra Records . He recorded an album's worth of material to be released in 2000, but the label cut back that year and by 2004, the label had ceased operations. In 2004, he released the mixtape, ''Take 'Em To The Cleaners , which would find its way into the hands of Kanye West . After this West offered him a guest spot on his debut album The College Dropout ''. He went on to appear on West's second album. In 2005, Kanye signed Consequence to his label GOOD Music through a deal with Columbia Records . In 2007, Consequence released his debut album, '' Don't Quit Your Day Job! ''. Singles from the album were "Callin' Me" and "Grammy Family". The album sold over 7,000 copies in its first week, prompting him to try to get his day job back.

In May 2011, Consequence confirmed that he had dissolved his partnership with Kanye West and G.O.O.D.
