David Byrne and Brian Eno have paired up for their first record together as co-writers since the highly influential and critically acclaimed 1981 release My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is the culmination of a year s worth of writing, recording, and travel
between New York and London.
Everything That Happens... was conceptualized during a visit to Brian Eno s studio after the two reconnected
upon Nonesuch Records re-release of Bush of Ghosts. Byrne explains, 'I recall Brian mentioning that he
had a lot of largely instrumental tracks he d accumulated, and since, in his words, he hates writing words,
I suggested I have a go at writing some words, and tunes over a few of them, and we see what happens.'
Thus the two began exchanging vocal and instrumental tracks, and the transatlantic collaboration began.
Everything That Happens...features Byrne s lyrics and voice alongside Eno s various electronic tracks.
'When we started this work, we started to think we were making something like electronic gospel: a music where singing was the central event, but whose sonic landscapes were not the type normally associated
with that way of singing,' says Eno. 'This thought tapped into my long love affair with gospel music, which,
curiously, was inadvertently initiated by David and the Talking Heads.'

'Here Lies Love' is a 22 song double-disc song cycle - improbably poignant, decidedly surreal, surprisingly thought provoking - about the rise and fall of the Philippines' notorious Imelda Marcos. It was conceived by David Byrne; composed by Byrne and British deejay/recording artist Fatboy Slim, a/k/a Norman Cook; and performed by a dream cast drawn from the worlds of indie rock, alt country, R&B and pop.
Byrne's taste in collaborators is as imaginative as it is impeccable, including Cyndi Lauper (who recounts, to lighthearted disco beats, Imelda's courtship with Ferdinand Marcos), Steve Earle (as the power-hungry Ferdinand), Dap-Kings vocalist Sharon Jones (recalling Imelda's introduction into New York society) and Natalie Merchant (as spurned Imelda confidante Estrella, anticipating the onset of martial law). Along with vocals turns from such stars as Tori Amos and the B-52's Kate Pierson, Byrne works with rising indie rockers St. Vincent and My Brightest Diamond; New York chanteuses Nellie McKay and Martha Wainwright; and dance-music divas Roisin Murphy and Santigold. Byrne himself appears as the voice of imperialistic America on 'American Troglodyte' a send-up that wouldn't have seemed out of places in Talking Heads' True Stories.

Byrne originally envisioned this as a musical theatre piece, to be mounted in disco and nightclub settings, reflecting the globe-trotting Marcos' taste for such velvet-roped spots as Studio 54 and Regine's. In 2006, he performed work-in-progress versions to enthusiastic audiences at New York City's Carnegie Hall and the Adelaide Festival in Australia. When more funding for a theatrical version proved elusive, While plans for a U.S. theatrical production continue to evolve, he has delivered this unique recording. 'Here Lies Love' has an effervescent disco feel, redolent of Fatboy Slim's own dance-floor anthems, with warm undercurrents of the Latin rhythms that have percolated through Byrne's recent solo work. The sunny arrangements act in counterpoint to the reality of the Marcos' increasingly repressive regime, reflecting the imagined inner life of the glamour-obsessed Imelda. Explains Byrne, 'For me, the darker side of the excesses are, for the most part, a matter of record. A lot of the audience is going to come with that knowledge already. What's more of a challenge is to get inside the head of the person who was behind all of that, and understand what made them tick.' Byrne offers no judgment and avoids the obvious - there is no mention of Imelda's infamous shoe collection.
Many of Byrne's lyrics are, astonishingly enough, constructed from actual Imelda quotes, including the project's title, the words that Imelda, now returned to the Philippines from U.S.-assisted exile in Hawaii, would like to have inscribed on her gravestone. Byrne generously annotates each song in the CD booklet and illustrates the story with archival photos. In a detailed preface, he reveals what drew him to this subject and the bumpy route he took to launch the project and, ultimately, record this CD. The lavish booklet is indeed a page-turner, just as 'Here Lies Love' is a wonderfully old-school album that rewards start-to-finish listening. Once again, Byrne - beloved as musician, thinker and bicyclist-about-town - reveals the breadth and singularity of his vision.

Japanese edition of his 2001 studio album includes one bonustrack, 'Empire'. 13 tracks in all.

David Byrne is a modern renaissance man and that s not just a cliché. From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new-wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He s been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful...and he shows no signs of slowing down three decades later.

This performance, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, Like Humans Do and the release of the album Look Into the Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, Descondido Soy. Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin s own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut.

Brian Eno and David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts appears downright visionary. With its "found" vocals, cut-and-paste arrangements, funked-up rhythms and embrace of influences from all around the globe, the duo's controversial work anticipated the creative cross-pollination and technological innovation of contemporary dance music, world music, hip hop and alternative rock. You can hear echoes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts in the anthems Moby built around vintage vocal samples, in the outrageously exotic beats of Missy Elliot and Timbaland, in the Middle Eastern accented chill-out tracks of Thievery Corporation or Bjork's otherworldly soundscapes.

David Byrne's 1985 Music For The Knee Plays, which he revived last winter in concert form during his sold-out Perspectives series at Carnegie Hall, has for many years been a kind of orphaned work. Until now, it hasn't been available on CD, and vinyl and cassette copies have long been scarce. Byrne had been invited to compose the 12-song piece by avant-garde theatre director/impresario Robert Wilson, with whom Philip Glass had collaborated on Einstein on the Beach, as part of his 12-hour opera the Civil Wars: A Tree Is Best Measured When It's Down. Commissioned by the Olympic Arts Festival for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, this day-long undertaking was comprised of six parts by separate composers Wilson had selected from around the world. Byrne's contribution was a series of interludes to be performed between the larger sections; critic Mel Gussow of the New York Times called them joints or connectives between the long acts of the CIVIL Wars. Funding shortfalls prevented the Civil Wars from being realized at the time and it has yet to be performed in its entirety. This CD/DVD edition of Music For The Knee Plays includes a slide show of black and white photographs by JoAnn Verburg, who had shot stills of the original production at 30-second intervals, creating a thorough visual document of the piece. In addition to the 13-track score that had been released in '85 by ECM Records, Byrne has selected seven previously unavailable instrumental tracks he'd recorded for The Knee Plays.

"So this is it," states David Byrne of his first release in three years, "a schizo version of the inside of my head...as rendered by many different bands and musicians."
