First Serve is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Witter (aka plug 2 / Dave of De La Soul) and Jacob 'Pop Life' Barrow (aka Plug 1 / Pos of De La Soul), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, "different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do." Their name comes from their motto "first come, first serve, get what you deserve."Pos & Dave were inspired by the acclaimed French production team, Chokolate & Khalid, by an approach to do something completely different with this album concept...a movie on wax of sorts. To do this Chokolate & Khalid created the alter ego 2&4, while the legendary De La Soul boys created Deen & Jacob for their part in this alternate reality. The four of them created their hip-hop fable together in Paris, tying songs to true stories where they worked best.

De La Soul's second album, originally released in 1991, was initially received poorly by the press and their fans due to its immediate rejection of the 'daisy-age' image created by their debut LP. In the years since, however, it has come to be accepted as a stone classic that may even surpass the feel-good jams of Three Feet High And Rising with its expansive scope and more diverse subject matter (drug addiction, incest, poseurs, in addition to the more expected, light-hearted material).
