History

The group was founded in 1992 in Denton, Texas|Denton , Texas by brothers Todd and Toby Pipes, who attended the University of North Texas at the time. The brothers enlisted drummer John Kirtland and guitarist Clay Bergus. Prior to their current name, The group originally performed as Leper Messiah, which is named after the line from Ziggy Stardust (song)|Ziggy Stardust .cite web|url= http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/515541/06251999/deep_blue_something.jhtml |title=Deep Blue Something : Deep Blue Something's Toby Pipes - Rhapsody Music Downloads |publisher=VH1.com |date= |accessdate=2012-05-09

Clay left the band just before they start recording their first album, 11th Song , which they have sold at shows during 1993. Kirk Tatom later joined the band after the album's release. In 1994, the band released their second album, Home (Deep Blue Something album)|Home via another independent label named Rainmaker Records, and was re-released a year later by major label Interscope Records . The accompanying single "Breakfast at Tiffany's" reached the top five in the United States and number one in the United Kingdom .

According to Todd Pipes, the lyrics of the song were inspired by Audrey Hepburn|Audrey Hepburn's performance in the feature film Roman Holiday , but he thought that one of Hepburn's other films would make a better song title. British Hit Singles & Albums (Edition 18), Guinness World Records Limited While "Breakfast At Tiffany's" was on the charts, Todd Pipes was fired from his job as an English teacher at the private Christian School after parents have complained that their children were being taught by a rock musician.cite web|last=Ruhlmann |first=William |url= http://www.allmusic.com/artist/deep-blue-something-p168311/biography |title=Deep Blue Something |publisher=AllMusic |date= |accessdate=2012-05-09

At the end of 1995, Kirk quit the band and Clay Bergus returns to his role as guitarist. The band were working on their sophomore album titled Byzantium (album)|Byzantium , planning to be released in 1996. However, the band came into legal troubles over the copyright of 11th song and "Breakfast At Tiffany's".cite web|url= http://www.dallasobserver.com/content/printVersion/270847/ |title=Dallas Copywrong? |publisher=Dallas Observer |date= |accessdate=2012-05-09 As a result, Interscope put the album on hold and the album was finally released in 1998, only in Japan and some European countries. However, the album was later re-released years later in the United States, currently under the label Kirtland Records.

In the wake of the Universal/PolyGram merger, the band parted ways with Interscope. They later signed with Azera Records, an independent label based in Phoenix, Arizona. Their Deep Blue Something (album)|self-titled album which contains five tracks from Byzantium, was released later that year. Shortly after the album's release, the band went into hiatus while not officially breaking up. Nonetheless, the band continued to perform shows, but on rare occasions.
