Dj Hamma’s career in the music industry has already spanned well over a decade, in which his love for entertaining has seen him tour the globe, as a B-Boy and Beat-boxer, turned Emcee, and now he seems to have found his calling as a DJ and producer.
Hamma specializes in the far more technical art of scratching and generally using the turntable as an instrument to make new music. He is also a very versatile DJ, easily rocking every type of event possible, from some of the biggest club/party events to ever take place in SA, to tour dj for South African billionaire and astronaut Mark Shuttleworth’s Hip2bsquare Tour, to slightly more exclusive events such as the South African Fashion Week, Res Fest (digital film and media festival), to tour dj for South African Music Award (SAMA) nominee Zubz and more.
He is a former founding member of the highly acclaimed group Brasse Vannie Kaap (BVK) with Ready- D, Dj E20 and the belated Mr. Fat. The group was ground breaking, a hip-hop band that specialized in rapping in their unique Afrikaans township slang. The band shot to national stardom, touring the country for several years, releasing 2 albums and receiving 2 SAMA nominations along the way.
Dj Hamma held down a hip-hop radio show on Bush Radio FM and also hosted the first dedicated hip-hop event in the Mother City called “Boogie Down Knights”. The event brand was so successful that it became a monthly event that was hosted nationally. The event brand featured acclaimed international djs and performers such as first female DMC finalist DJ Asif, DJs Kofi & Semtex (head of UK Def Jam), Dj Olabean, Dj Woody (2x IFT and Vestax World Champ), Dj K-IM (France), Mr. Thing (Extended Playas), Dead Prez (Internationally acclaimed Rap group, USA) and many more..
He also shared the stage with many international performers such as Dj Qbert (USA, ISP, legendary scratch innovator), Dj Cut Killa (French Radio and Party dj), Tim Westwood (Radio 1 UK), Scratch from the legendary Roots Crew (USA), Cypress Hill, Limp Biscuit, Kelis, De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Jeru Da Damaga, Black Thought (The Roots), Dead Prez, Boots (The Coup), Grand Master Flash (Legendary Hip hop Dj) and countless others.
As a producer he earned production credits on projects with the likes of the Mr. Devious, Zubz, Reason The Mass, Base Mental Platform, Archetypes, Goddessa, Ben Sharpa, Mpisi The Monolith (Botswana), Tracey Lee Oliver (Road To Fame star), SABC Wonder gigs compilation, Sport scene 2005 music Compilation, African Dope mix tape compilation, The Hype Mag Mix tape, Farrell Adams and more.
He also worked as Music Compiler and Producer for “The Pure Monate Show”, hosted on SABC1. Collaboration with legendary guitarist Tim Parr saw him earn extra credits for producing work for TV ads, music compilations and underground releases. He also featured as resident dj on a prime time SABC1 youth talk show called Cipher.
Hamma is a national ambassador for brands such as Hybrid, Numark DJ equipment, K Swiss Clothing as well as recently being awarded an AKAI product endorsement deal.
There’s been quite a buzz about DJ Hamma’s latest brainchild, the Turntablist VCD series called ‘Spindle’, which’s been doing its rounds through the underground hip-hop networks. The series, which recently saw the 7th installment set in circulation, is compiled by the crew made up of DJ’s Hamma, Tha Cut and Dj Calculus, featuring interviews and footage of local and international Turntable wizards working their magic.
Watch this space for the Dj Hamma project entitled “Crtl-Alt-Delete, A non- responsive project” due for release late 2008.
