Recorded in the same two week session as Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I by Stuart Hallerman at Avast and mastered by Mell Detmer, Earth s Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II carries on in the freely improvised, folkloric vein of the title track from their last release. Tape was rolled and spontaneous composition occurred.
Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II is striking in many ways, not least in the wildly improvised nature of this particular recording. Earth s songs, Sigil of Brass and The Corascene Dog, perfectly emphasise how the interplay between the foursome becomes even more accomplished as the recording evolves, a testament to the dynamism of this particular line up. Meanwhile the track, His Teeth Did Brightly Shine, veers further into an entirely other direction, recalling sounds of the great British Acid Folk Generation. This new Earth material brings forth some highly original and deeply mesmeriising tones throughout, at times more hopeful and less dark and death oriented than previous work. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II is ultimately a brand new, completely unanticipated direction for Earth, and a very welcome one at that.
Following the Extra Capsular reissues, Earth's next offering is a brand new studio album. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1 is a fine testament to the fact that they have come a long way since 1989. Drawing on inspiration from both British Folk-Rock bands the Pentangle and Fairpoint Convention and the North African Tuuareg band Tinariwen, the new material, while still heavy is much more fluid and melodically oriented, less dense and more textured and nuanced. It contains greater improvisatory interplay between the musicians.
On one hand, the new album acknowledges previous recordingsā¦on the other hand, there have been some significant changes which have give birth to yet another new sound, the main change being the line up and so joining Dylan and Adrianne on the album is cellist Lori Goldston and Karl Blan on electric bass.
There are many breaths of fresh air in this record, many hopeful tones and drones as well as more eerie ones. One thing is for sure, this incarnation of Earth excels all expectations.

We have been blessed with a massive offering from the Gods! For the first time ever the debut recording of Earth are available in one concise, beautifully documented capsule.
A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra Capsular Extractoin contains the entire 1990 Smegma Studios sessions which are the debut recording from Earth. Previously available scattered via the Extra Capsular Extractions EP and Sunn Smps and Smashed Guitar CD. This essential collection contains every note from the infamous first Earth recording sessions.
Earth was founded by Dylan Carlson circa 1989 and in this infancy stages contained several different members including: Slim Moon, Joe Preston and even Dylan s close friend Kurt Kobain.
Unbeknownst to Mr. Carlson at the time was that his seemingly simplistic experimentations with heavy music would literally spawn an entire genre, style and sound borrowing from his musical theories. Of course we re talking about what is commonly referred to as Drone or Drone-Metal. From sunn 0))) to Pelican to Mogwai to Jim O Rourke the impact that the heaviosity of Dylan s tone and music has had is immeasurable. This collection of the very first experimentations/recordings is an important insight into understanding the birth of this sound as well as a glimpse of the foreshadowing for the thunder to come.
