E. Ann Powell is the/a primary songwriter, and is bassist, guitarist, harp-picker, lead/backing vocalist, and producer in Ethel-Ann, a band that's gone through more changes than the I Ching. Ann also is the founder and president of Elephant Patch Music, Inc., a non-profit music publishing corporation. Ann cut her first album upon returning from a junior (UNC-CH--GO HEELS!) year of study in Spain. The Elephant Patch on JTO Records was cut, mixed and mastered in a day. Players included Johnny O. and the incredible Fred Rumfelt.
She then landed in Hollywood, living downstairs at Danny DiVito and Rhea Pearlman's, based off the weirdness of E. Patch. Simultaneously, she worked with a black/ male/funk trio. Then, relocating to Cincinnati, she lead an all-girl band, recording with Don Dixon @ same time REM's Murmur was released. Then, she moved to NYC. Next, Austin, TX., where the magic happened: Child Bearing Hips, under Ann's "direction" played many SXSW's, beginning with the second one. NMS, CMJ Seminar, voted "Future's Jackpot" in Colleg Music Journal.
NC Emerging Artist Grantee, Regional Artist Grantee, Carolina Archives of Music Inductee. Produced and backed by Nona Hendryx, Rodney Crowell, J.D. Foster, covered by The Shivers and King Friday. She is a veteran of the industry, now training (w/Bobby Pearson) a new drummer for the band. Ann holds a M.A. in English/Postcolonial Studies and M.A. in Community Counseling: one needs this skill to work with egos in music industry. However, she insists that the mental health industry is more corrupt than music industry:-) She taught undergrads @ NCSU and teaches at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She also works as a musicians' consultant. Upcoming gigs with Alberta Hall (soul/gospel), B.P. (reggae), ERL (original EAP stuff). Email: eapowe@charter.net for dates. Studio dates for next project set for Feb. 2010.
Artist Mission
Ann Powell and Nona Hendryx were riding down to studio in NYC one afternoon. Nona and Ann agreed that they would both be fired by 3 pm as A&R folks. Why? "We'd sign all the good stuff. No one-trick ponies. No tax-offs. They'd hate us." As the founder and president of a non-profit publishing company, would one conclude that Ann is in this for the short-haul? Not hardly. Social Constructivism is about negotiation. "One Day @ A Time" is more than a Willie Nelson song:-) Wanna make VERY good $$$ doing what one does best: original music writing, performing, recording. Funk, rock, country, cowpunk, blues, jazz swing--however the song writes itself and allows itself to be "dressed" to SELL. If Jimmie Dale Gilmore wants one of Ann's songs and Reba Mac took one, well, that speaks.
