It's amazing this recording was ever completed to the extent that it was. Jennifer and I laid down 10 tracks, but the "first engineer" had to go, replaced by a temporary engineer until the original guy could get his act a bit back together. I've recorded in LA, NYC, Austin and had really forgotten what a "boys' club" North Carolina could be.

Rodney Crowell/Bluebird Cafe - Nashville, TN USA
|
| Rodney Crowell backs up Ethel-Ann | 7/13/1991
|
My manager got tape to Rose at SXSW. Rodney called to tell me he REALLY liked my songwriting and that I had written "the definitive song about AIDS," which was strange, because "And Eddie and Eddie" was not on the tape my manager gave to Rose. I 'd scored another gig at the "Bird," asked him to sing/play with me. The duet almost was not, as he and I got into argument about the movie, "Thelma and Louise." I hit low: was it necessary to sing, "Doo wah doo wah" on Lyle's cover of "Stand By Your Man"?

A Catholic Irishman and a Protestant Englishman spear-headed this benefit for earthquake victims in Mexico. It was a joy to be a part of a benefit with other bands like Grains of Faith, Poi Dog, 2 Nice Girls, Girls in the Nose--and decent club owners and managers who weren't afraid of losing a "dime" for somebody else's "half-penny" gained.
