Artist Biography

Veteran Milwaukee musician-producer-engineer Gary Tanin’s career, spanning decades, is a study in the convergence of musical creativity and technology.

At age 16, Tanin had already laid the foundations for his calling. Ambitious and business savvy, he landed a record deal with Odessa Records for the rock group Medius who both recorded and performed his compositions.

While attending the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, during the early 70s, Tanin apprenticed as an audio engineer at ARCO Recording Studios, where he studied the Art and Alchemy of audio recording and production. In the mid 70s he released the critically acclaimed, self-produced concept album Otto & The Elevators. He produced dozens of artists during the 70s and 80s, continuing to hone his artistic and technical sensibilities.

In the early 80s Tanin redefined himself by diving headlong into newly emerging computer technology, which allowed him to combine elements of digital technique with the art form. He has had numerous articles published in a number of industry publications, including the CMC Source Book and AfterTouch(tm). This level of multi-dimensionality was the essential ingredient required in working with Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads.

The pairing of music and the innovative uses of all things digital led to Harrison’s involvement with Tanin on his 1995 MultiMusica USA release, Sublime Nation. To quote from a nationally syndicated 3-Star review on the album, “...veteran Milwaukee musician-producer-engineer Gary Tanin goes all out on “Sublime Nation.” He employs top-shelf technology to concoct this superclean-sounding album, with all-star help from co-producer/musician Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads)... Tanin and Harrison bring a sincere pop vision to the project...and the studio wizardry has drawn (deserved) comparisons to Steely Dan.” Dan Aloi, Star Gazette, NY.

Gary Tanin’s 1996 Japanese/US release, XPensive Dogs, contains intercontinental musical energies. a sonic fusion of east and west. Tanin and his Japanese collaborator, Toshi Hiraoka, created an amalgam consisting of an intriguing mix of Tokyo Techno-Pop with rock-hard vocal harmonies.

Radio MARAB, Germany remarks“Combines drivin'’, funky HC influence, super cool vocals ‘n speedin'’ guitars - excellent, can’t wait to hear more!” Cambridge University Radio, England writes “The Dogs combine breakneck poly-rhythms, quirky guitar lines that spiral off all over the shop, wild squeaky synths, chunks of sound... XPensive Dogs are both innovative and excellent...” and a Static Zine, USA review states “I can compare them to no one, with the exception of a hint of Zappa here & there. Unique & intelligent with some great hooks... Loved it! A+”

A follow-up XPensive Dogs II album is being released in 2000. While the Japanese label Hard Disc International continues promotion of XPensive Dogs, Tanin’s 1995 U.S. release Sublime Nation celebrated its Japanese debut on Muse Enterprise’s Mouse Records imprint.

Gary Tanin is considered a world class producer/engineer, nominated for 1999 WAMI Award Producer Of The Year and Engineer Of The Year categories, he has mastered discs for the major label debut of ex-Violent Femme, Victor DeLorenzo, Pancake Day (ALMO Sounds/Geffen); Daryl Stuermer’s (Genesis/ Phil Collins) Live and Learn; and recently producing, engineering, mixing and mastering Sammy Llanas’ (BoDeans) first solo album A Good Day To Die.
