TACOMA – With the release of her new CD, Remember The Passion, Heather Ruiz realizes that there is a lot to be thankful for. Heather has overcome immense health problems to arrive at this point in her life. Born and raised in Puyallup, WA, she was born with a form of Spina Bifida that can challenge one’s ability to walk and his or her organs to function normally. When Heather was 18 months old, doctors performed surgery on her back in hopes to have her walk again. A miraculous recovery occurred and Heather experienced a typical, energetic childhood. Unfortunately at age 12, any feeling of normalcy vanished when she collapsed every time she tried to walk. Heather’s doctors called the problem “a tethered cord”, which inhibited any physical activity in her legs. Another surgery became necessary. Once again she survived an operation in which paralysis is possible, but somewhere in between being born with Spina Bifida and undergoing two major surgeries, Heather developed Scoliosis, which causes the spinal cord to curve. Thankfully, Heather’s curve just misses the mark for needing another surgery; however, many children and adults are not so fortunate, which is why Heather plans on donating a portion of her CD sales and concert sales to United Way. Dreams can quickly disappear when poor health rules your life; therefore, Heather is grateful that her dreams can continue, especially with the release of her CD.
Heather’s CD showcases her unique versatility as she covers the 30s and 40s era, opera, Broadway, and adult contemporary – an obstacle not yet conquered in the music industry. When asked by the press why she chose to include so many genres on one CD, she replied, “If you look on anybody’s ipod, you’ll see a variety of musical styles – why not have them all on one CD?” It appears Heather Ruiz may be taking a financial risk with this approach, especially when it’s never been very appreciated by many recording labels. Perhaps, however, people are tired of listening to what record executives consider to be quality music, because if you’re looking for true quality, Heather Ruiz is the ticket. She seems to be the female version of Josh Groban as she combines her classically-trained voice with beautifully arranged orchestral backgrounds that entice the passion and intensity of one’s soul. Working with talented professionals, such as a Grammy-award winning songwriter, Kenny LaMar, the renowned singer/songwriter SueAnn Carwell, and recording at Studio X in Seattle (Once “Bad Animal” owned by Heart) have aided in making this idea of a female, cross-over artist become a reality.
It’s time to present this Spanish rose to the entire world. Whether you feel like dancing to one of her renditions of a classic standard, or you want to relax with a loved one while one of Heather’s originals plays in the background, you can find it all on Remember The Passion. Heather Ruiz will be performing at The Freighthouse Squares “Endless Summer Deck Party” on September 6th and at the 21 Commerce on September 19th at 9 pm. Heather’s album, photos, videos, and concert dates are available on her website www.heatherruiz.com and her Myspace page: www.myspace.com/heatherruiz. Her voice speaks for itself!
