What is STRIDE PIANO? YouTube Instructional Videos Help To Share This Part of American Musical Heritage

Published on 7/1/2008
By Martha Hession
The legacy of STRIDE piano has become a second full time vocation to the multi -talented pianist, Jim Hession. After a year of the Hessions sharing videos on YouTube, the amount of requests for answers to the techniques and patterns used in this classic jazz piano style have been overwhelming. Individual topics such as right hand figures, blues clusters, improvisation and interrupted bass lines are covered in concise 5-6 minute segments. Each STRIDE TIP is demonstrated on the keyboard to coincide with the verbal explanation. At this writing there are over two dozen STRIDE TIP videos posted on YouTube.

Jim Hession is a classically trained jazz pianist that by the age of 18 years old had become well known on the West Coast for his two handed mastery of the historical jazz piano styles. By the time he had received his Music Composition degree from UCLA, Jim had worked with many of the legends of early jazz. Many of these jazz legends headed to California to work during the resurgence of the traditional jazz craze of the 1940's to the 1960's. While in college Jim had performed with Nappy LaMare, George Probert, Pete Daily, Ed "Montudie" Garland, Teddy Buckner, Joe Darensbourg, and Bob Havens to name a few.

After moving from classical piano to ragtime as an early teen Jim became fascinated with the more demanding classic styles of Jelly Roll Morton, the STRIDE giants( Waller, Johnson, The Lion) and boogie woogie. In 1969 a magical happenstance occurred when Jim was invited by producer Milt Larsen to participate in a piano playing party honoring jazz originals Eubie Blake and Shelton Brooks. The invitees were all professional piano players from the west coast. When Eubie heard Jim play he immediately cornered him and ask him to be the first new artist on his Eubie Blake Music (EBM) record label.

The invaluable lessons that Jim learned in the early years from Eubie Blake and other jazz legends continue to contribute to his STRIDE and mainstream jazz piano performances, especially in the area of improvisation. Just as the young pianists of the 1960's learned from the originators, the young pianists of today have much to learn from them. It is in this spirit of "passing the baton" that the initiation of these instructional videos have come to the forefront, and it is the wish of both Jim and Martha Hession that this new generation will carry the pure elements of the STRIDE PIANO playing tradition into the future.
