It was a cold April Day in NewOrleans. The temperature was a windy 50 degrees outside and a red hot jazz temperature inside the Jazz Historical Park's auditorium. The famed jazz vibraphonist, Warren Chiasson arrived from New York to celebrate the new release of his CD "Quartessence" on Audiophile. After several days of a whirlwind number of interviews, Warren joined Jim and Martha Hession for an one and a half hour concert of hot jazz. On stage also was the multitalented Ryan Burrage on reeds, the amazing Mark Brooks on bass and the outstanding Ray Fransen on drums.
It was to a SRO audience that Warren showed his brilliance as he showcased fifty years of expertise in the Jazz World's "A" List of performers. Beginning with a tribute to Lionel Hampton's "Flyin Home" the sextet traversed the range of the jazzrepertiore from Jobin's Wave to Martha's vocal on Takin' A Chance On Love to the ultimate Goodman/Hampton/TeddyWilson rendition of Avalon. Warren's arrangement of September Song from his Kurt Weill CD put the audience into a funky groove.
The concert wrapped with a wildly extravagent rendition of Ellington's Caravan which brought the crowd to their feet in an ovation that lasted several minutes. This was a marvelous way to spend the Easter Weekend in New Orleans! |
