Album Summary
Produced by songwriter/drummer Tom Hambridge (producer of Buddy Guy's two most recent Grammy-winning CDs, Skin Deep and Living Proof, as well as albums for Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood and others), Hellfire burns with rock energy and intense blues feeling. Walker, who wrote or co-wrote seven of the CD's eleven tracks, says it's the hardest rocking and most deeply soulful album of his career. His blistering blues guitar playing and gospel-tinged vocals effortlessly blend throughout the album. From the psychedelic overtones of the title track (a harrowing and personal tale of the struggle of good versus evil) to the slow, simmering and pleading "What's It Worth" to the Stones-y rocker "Ride All Night," Hellfire is the work of a man possessed. Walker's original showstopper "Soldier For Jesus" (featuring vocal harmonies from The Jordanaires, who also appear on "Don't Cry") fits seamlessly alongside the other selections, making perfect thematic sense in the tradition of Al Green, Marvin Gaye or Prince, who all successfully combined carnal desires and gospel devotion.
On the heels of his last CD, which won 'Album Of The Year' at the Blues Music Awards, Joe Louis Walker returns with a live recording that includes guests Johnny Winter, Tommy Castro, Duke Robillard, Kenny Neal, Tab Benoit and a dozen other blues who's who. He is a multiple Grammy Award and Blues Music Award winner and one of the highest profile blues artists on the scene. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis and Branford Marsalis. JLW is called a 'living legend' in the cover story of the current Blues Revue. He says however, 'the best is yet to come.'
Multiple Grammy and Blues Music Award winner Joe Louis Walker's second release for Stony Plain is a landmark album that follows on the heels of his highly acclaimed 'Witness To The Blues.' Both produced by guitar legend Duke Robillard. Kevin Eubanks, the longtime leader of the Tonight Show Band is featured on two tracks along with Doug James, Duke Robillard and members of Duke's band.
