Johnny Mercer was one of the founders of Capitol Records, so it's fitting that this entry in the label's Collectors Series is such a well-compiled and -designed package. Comprised of 20 key sides made between 1942 and 1949, it captures the Savannah-born singer/songwriter's lazy, bluesy delivery on both his own tunes ("Blues in the Night," "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive," "One for My Baby") and others' (Frank Loesser's "Baby It's Cold Outside," which Mercer and Margaret Whiting made into a No. 1 hit). Mercer was a major figure in American popular music; this CD makes clear that he was also a highly entertaining performer. --Rickey Wright

A 100th birthday celebration honoring one of the all-time greatest lyricists! John Herndon Mercer was born in 1909, and died in 1975. Making his centenary in a manner befitting his widespread and long-lasting influenced would require releasing a veritable library of music. This single disc collection is intended to serve as a portal into the rich, lyrical world that Mercer created, to show how the music of one man continues to light creative fires in today's music scene. He’s probably best known for founding Capitol Records and penning countless hit tunes, but Johnny Mercer was also a heckuva singer, and here on this Collectors’ Choice Music exclusive—one of the few Mercer CDs available--Johnny’s joined by a couple of pretty fair singers in their own right, Helen O’Connell and Bobby Troup! Hop on board with Johnny and his jazzy combo for "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe," "G.I. Jive," "Lazy Bones," "Accentuate the Positive," "Moon River," "Satin Doll," "Jamboree Jones," "Sweetheart Tree," "Something’s Gotta Give," "Two of a Kind," "Autumn Leaves" and "Jeepers Creepers."
