Originally released in 1970, Forca Bruta is an absolute classic from one of Brazil's most consistently great artists. Despite being embraced by the Tropicalia movement (with Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa both covering his songs) there are no psychedelic meandering to be found within these grooves, this set is pure samba-soul. Ben is backed here by the innovative Trio Mocotó who never overplay and allow his soulful vocal delivery and samba guitar to be the centerpieces. 180 gram vinyl.
We are extremely proud to be releasing this long-awaited collection of Jorge Ben covers in March 2009. With such classics under his belt as 'Mas Que Nada', covered by the likes of Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau, and the song 'Taj Mahal' which was the source of Rod Stewart's 'Do You Think I'm Sexy?', Ben is a huge force in Brazilian popular music. Often described as the James Brown of Brazilian music due to his prolific output, he is the most sampled Brazilian artist ever ranging from the Black Eyed Peas to DJ Marky (LK). Jorge Ben Jr's song catalogue has been covered by some of the finest bands in Brazil. This selection represents a more dance-floor orientated outing including mega-rarities for the collecting fiends like Cosa Nostra by Os Mutreteiros Grilados, to tracks that even Ben himself never got around to singing like Rei Do Maracatu's Cyro Aguiar.
