An Oklahoma native, Chenoweth sang gospel music as a child and studied opera before deciding to pursue a career in musical theatre . Adopted as a baby, Kristi Dawn Chenoweth was born and grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma , a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma .
