Diminutive in size but gigantic in stature, Little Willie John was a genuine architect of soul. Along with Clyde McPhatter, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke, the visionary singer stood at the forefront of fusing gospel intensity to rhythm and blues tradition. And had he not died inside a Walla Walla prison at the age of 30, his name would likely be etched in the same soul Pantheon as his peers.
Despite his abbreviated career, Willie cut a string of seminal sides for Cincinnati-based King Records from 1955 to 1961 that rank among the finest R&B waxed by any singer for any label of the period. It didn't matter whether the song was an after-hours blues ballad or an uptempo footstomper: Willie's agile, melismatic voice made the number soar. As Motown legend Lamont Dozier says in Bill Dahl's notes to this collection, "Willie John was just an extraordinary talent. He knew how to touch you with a song, and he knew how to raise the hairs on the back of your neck."
Now, from Real Gone Music comes the most comprehensive collection of this overlooked soul superstar ever assembled: two CDs, 32 tracks that include every chart hit plus its accompanying, seldom-compiled B-side. And the B-sides are where some of the real fun is, for Willie saved some of his most rockin recordings for the flip; joining such landmark R&B recordings as "Fever," "All Around the World," "Need Your Love So Bad" and "Home at Last" on this collection are such crackling tunes as "Spasms," "Let's Rock While the Rockin's Good" and "Do You Love Me" (recorded with Little Richard's Band The Upsetters).
With notes by R&B expert Bill Dahl and photos from the King label archive, Little Willie John: Complete Hit Singles A s & B s offers the casual listener all the hits and the collector the requisite rarities. It s an essential addition to any soul library.
The second set in Ace's in-depth look at Little Willie John's influential singles for the King label. The first release was The Early Sessions. The hits here include 'Talk To Me, Talk To Me,' 'Leave My Kitten Alone' (a staple of the Beatles live act), 'Sleep' and 'Heartbreak (It's Hurtin' Me)' with 20 other A and B sides from 1958-1960, including the Mod / R&B club monster 'I'm Shakin' (covered by the Blasters). ACE. 2005.
One of the great lost albums of the 60s finally gets a worldwide CD premiere! Some of the classiest and best mid 60s soul-blues ever committed to tape has remained unheard until now.
Recorded for Capitol in early 1966 while Little Willie John was awaiting final sentencing for manslaughter, the album was mired in a raft of contractual arguments and was put on ice once it became clear that Willie was going to have to serve a prison term and wouldnt be able to promote it.
This CD contains everything that Willie cut for Capitol and is enhanced by a selection of stereo mixes and alternate versions from the sessions.
Arranged and produced by two music legends, HB Barnum and David Axelrod, it features the cream of the mid-60s L.A. session musician scene and is topped off by one of the greatest soul voices. This is a listening experience that no true soul fan will want to miss. And if you dont believe us, ask Richard Hawley who was enthusing about it during its mastering processas he mastered his own new album in the studio next door!
Mojo magazine is doing a major feature including an interview with David Axelrod.

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the Blues great, plus bonus tracks, on one CD. This release includes Little Willie John's second and third albums, Talk To Me and Mister Little Willie John, both of which were recorded in 1958. These LPs offer a solid introduction into this man's special brand of Soul balladry, musical feeling, passionate delivery and R&B innovation. He was one of James Brown's primary influences, and Brown would later use a similar approach for his own more orchestrated ballads. Here, you'll find the foot-tapping rhythms, spine-tingling styling and the sentimental mood renderings so typical of his personal appearances. 28 tracks. Hoo Doo Records. 2010.

Album Summary
24 Tracks, Opening with his First 12 Singles (Both a and B Sides), Culled from the Early King Sessions Between 1955 and 1957.
In the wake, and hot on the heels, of Nineteen Sixty Six, our critically-acclaimed first time issue of Little Willie Johns Capitol sessions, we present our third and final volume of Willies King recordings.
This one embraces his complete recordings from 1961 to 1963, an era in which R&B was morphing into soul at a rapid rate. Many of the tracks here show just how well equipped Willie would have been to handle the new style had his career not been truncated by imprisonment for manslaughter in 1964.
This end of Willies King catalogue has been less well represented on CD in the past, and so a good many of these tracks have never appeared in digital format before.
An extensive sleeve note, which covers both the era of this CD and the sad end to his life, is complemented by a beautifully illustrated booklet.
Will appeal to both long term LWJ fans and those who have become aware of his excellence via Aces previous CD issues.
