This is a story of the three states of matter: solid beats, liquid funk and vocals that waft by in gaseous clouds. Coming from Danny Bukem's "Good Looking" stable, the intense almost evangelical belief in drum & bass that Progression Sessions 5 exhibits, will come as no surprise. The man famed for such seminal 1990's releases as Logical Progression and Earth, has kept up a phenomenal output of music over the last five years, but probably because of his purist, uncompromising vision the standard has rarely slipped from the highest level. On PS5 we get some of Good Looking's top performers in one seamless mix: rapper MC Conrad throwing down the verbal gauntlet, new kid on the block Big Bud in blessed-out mode, well-kept secret Lacarno offering up gnarled pieces of raw funk, and of course The Man--Bukem himself. As Conrad explains: "We wanna make you feel like it's June when it's December". Backed by a 4-4 house beat such a sentiment would appear trite and cheesy. But set against the powerfunk of Bukem's protégés it makes perfect sense. Truly progressive. --Tom de Castella
LTJ Bukem gathered together this very special retrospective of tracks from his pre-Good Looking days. Dating from 1990-'92, these tracks broke new ground in the UK hardcore techno scene but are virtually unknown outside of it. One track, 'Dreamworld' has never been released at all. Amazing collectible stuff, all on CD for the first time. Comes in a 4 panel digi-box with track-by-track liner notes by LTJ Bukem. Good Looking Release.
